But seriously, the team is coming off a 6-7 season. If they're ranked just for beating an FCS team and a Big East team, the polls are more flawed than one could ever imagine.
1. The initial poll has to look at last year's results. No getting around this.
2. But once the first week of games has been played the initial rankings should be merely tweaked up and down a little because of a loss, they should be done from scratch.
3. Using the logic of the gentlement above (in bold), what is a logical reasoning for Texas being ranked over Tennessee? They were worse than us last year and beat Rice -- who is dreadful -- in their first game.
4. Can anybody provide an articulable argument for why USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, and several other notables are ranked ahead of us.
5. Or Florida. They had a better record than us last year but were worse at the end of the year....and way way worse at that. Why should they be ranked ahead of us?
I could go on with various examples of rankings this early have no basis in reality and are dictated largely by recent reputation of the progam. I should note that this phenomenon applied to Tennessee for many years, and we were grossly over-ranked early in the year when we were actually a terrible terrible team.
I will close by saying that I do believe that UT is one of the top 25 teams in the country. And I trust my evaluation moreso than the national polls which are dictated more by inertia than anything else.
