If VolNation existed in the 90's

This placed would've crashed for days in September '96. Those were dark days.

It was so much worse living in Memphis.

The city was always fiercely proud of Tiger Basketball but Tiger Football was derisively referred to as Tiger High.

The area's esteem and pride in the Tigers has improved tenfold since then.

At the time it was so incredibly obnoxious hearing all the 'local tiger fans' come out of the wood work for a week.

A few things I would add:

1) John Chavis's promotion from defensive line coach to DC would have been VERY unpopular on VN in 1995 after Larry Marmie's departure. Sports Talk with Mike Keith was filled with callers wanting Mike DuBose who was Alabama's defensive line coach at the time. I think VN would have clamored for him as well. Chavis would have remained mostly unpopular until after the Georgia game in 1998, although the Citrus Bowl win over Ohio St would have won him some converts.

2) Lovie Smith was our DB coach in 1993 and 1994 and would also have been eviscerated on VN. Our secondary was atrocious in '94.

3) The scandals we went through in the mid-90's would have made Fulmer's job more difficult in an age where everyone had the internet. The Amber Benson phone card theft and massive use by over half the team would have been a bigger deal. Obviously, Peyton Manning's mooning of Jamie Whited in '96 would have been a bigger deal as well.

4) I can't imagine what VN would have looked like on November 9th, 1996. Nothing since then compares to that kind of an upset when we were thought to have been a National Championship contender.

5) The Recruiting Forum would have ALWAYS been a fun place to be from 1994 to 1999... There was never a reason to have been negative about what we were pulling in. Even Catbone and Wylo would have been Sunshine Pumpers over there.

The newspaper clipping is still up at the Commissary in Germantown. We'll never live that down. At the the same time, that BBQ is the best I've ever had. Thank you RDUVOL#14 wife, you have transformed me. Memphis BBQ is amazing.

Majors' Gay Street quarterbacks comment would have stirred it up.

The jaw that was broken by a player in the HPER building.

Doug Dickey's Shaklee scandal would have been epic.

The Kinko's Faxgate.

The mentally challenged young lady that was taken advantage of and the infamous meeting at Shoney's that followed.

Gun shots at Alumni Gym.

Long Distance McCullough.

Randy Sanders versus Jeff Francis.

The open mic picking up the Cotton Bowl f-bombs.

Rutgers.

Losing to one of the 3 Stooges every year through 1984.

11 and 9 game winless streaks versus Bama.

The blocked FG and 6-9 loss to Bama in 1990.

The Reggie Cobb suspension.

Jamal Lewis not getting snaps as a freshman.

Manning's happy feet.

Coach Ford at Arkansas saying "I hope he tears up a knee" getting picked up by the open mic.

So many lost opportunities lost in the pre-internet days for posters to be all stupid and whut not.

I wasn't truly nega until about 08. I yelled at the tv many times over stupid calls by Fulmer, but never truly gave in to the hate until that year. I remember visiting firefulmer.com or something like that. Lol

1996 season

- Everything is in place. #2 in the country, bama has fallen, we have found our savior (Manning), and we're gonna show Spurrier who the real king of the SEC is when he comes to Neyland Stadium. VN is reeling.

- First game. Vols crush UNLV in home opener 62-3. Yep, didn't expect anything less.

- Second game. We beat a very good UCLA team, led by QB Cade Mcnown, on the road by 15. Very good road win. We are battle tested and ready to beat Florida into an oblivion.

- Florida game. VN is mostly optimistic, slightly nervous (full spurrier/florida effect has yet to set in). Vols fall behind early. They fall behind some more. Fun 'n' Gun has destroyed our hopes and dreams. But wait, our hero is leading what is likely the greatest comeback in Tennessee history! Nope.... Proud of how our guys fought back, but it still hurts like hades. Oh well, still a long season ahead (maybe we'll meet them again in a bowl, heh).

- Sunshines begin to argue that Spurrier possibly has a psychological/coaching edge over Fulmer. Negas counter that we'll have Manning one more year and this year's loss was a fluke, those lucky gators...

- We're now 6-1 and #6 in the nation. VN has the Florida loss well behind them (although it does get brought up sparingly). Everyone knows there's a realistic chance of making it to the Sugar Bowl (NC Game).

- Here come our little stepbrothers from Tiger High. Yeah, we're on the road, but this is supposed to be another day at the office. VN is having a great time. Talking about reservations to New Orleans, making fun of Memphis, Peyton's Heisman Trophy that awaits him, what teams ranked ahead of us could lose this weekend, etc. The occasional Sunshine will caution others on VN that we would actually be 7-0 right now with Majors because there's no way he would have let that trash-mouth Spurrier get the mental edge on him.

- OMG, his knee was down! WTF. Ok, we've got this. Absolutely, positively, no way we lose this. It's Memphis for crying out loud!

- Final Score Memphis 21 Tennessee 17. Total shock. VN isn't even melting down. It's stunned. Flabbergasted. Befuddled. The threads slowly come in as reality has a few moments to sink in. "WTF just happened?".

- Sunshines are saying "SEE! Told you Fulmer would lose a game like this! Majors would have at least tied them!" Negavols are at a strange crossroads. They don't really know what to say. After much thought and discussion, the Negas remain true to CPF because, well, "It was a once in a lifetime kind of loss". Standby.

- VN has to come to terms that a NC just wasn't meant to be. But we still have a great team! Dang Memphis game.

- Vols roll through the rest of the season. Peyton continues to build his legend amongst VN. Tennessee finishes 9-2 and #9 in the country.

- Vols are chosen to play in the Citrus Bowl against the previous-Cinderella Northwestern. A few Northwestern fans come to VN to let everyone know that Darnell Autrey is going to put up 250 yards on the ground and punch-in 4 TDs.

- Peyton is not invited to New York. What? How in the... It had to be the Memphis game! Maybe he didn't have the best season statistically, and yeah, Wuerffel beat him head-to-head, but geez. Peyton Manning is at least a Top 4 outstanding player! VN debates whether or not he should come back or go pro. "He gone. Hope Fulmer enjoyed his best days", says sunshines.

- The season was a disappointment compared to expectations, but VN is pumped for the Citrus Bowl and a potentially strong finish until.....

- Just when we thought we were done with Spurrier. The Ole Ball Coach doing what he does best: Jabbing his opponents. "You can't spell citrus without U and T!", he says in his yelpie voice. VN now loathes Steve Spurrier as he struts to the National Title game in a rematch against Florida State.

- Vols beat Northwestern 48-28. The Memphis loss still stings. VN can't quite shake off the devasting effects of Memphis. That's okay because....

- VolNation is awaiting the biggest announcement in the history of Tennessee football. The great one. The legend. Will he stay? One would think the pope is coming to visit Knoxville.

- "I'm staying at the University of Tennessee". VN server crashes. The sunshines say, "Boy, this is great! But Fulmer is real lucky he's staying. He's a .500 coach without him. Majors would have already won one. He did it at Pittsburgh, he'd definitely do it with Peyton" The Negas are focusing less on their choice of HC in Fulmer, and more in the possibilities with Peyton another year (as is most everyone).

I think a young Catbone in 1997 would have posted something like this:

"My diaper's full and the Vols will never win a championship in my lifetime. Not until we pony up and hire a real coach, like Dennis Erickson...and why do they keep giving me peas?" :cray:

Heh, He-Made-It, awesome. Really creative idea, and I'm loving reading the installments. Please do keep going! In many ways, you're nailing the VN community.

Just one caveat: you are tying yourself into pretzel knots, trying to describe and imagine the evolution of a Sunshine vs Nega theme in the community. I think maybe you're linking it too strongly to Fulmer vs Majors. You might be better off cutting bait on that and just using this guideline: Sunshines favor whoever is in charge, and all the players, even irrationally. While Negas care primarily about themselves and whether they get bragging rights for Monday morning at work, and will turn on any coach or player who gets in their way. Hehe, cynical, but try it out, see if it doesn't by-golly work for you. :)

Thanks again, great idea!

Exactly. I was starting to notice the pretzel thing too. haha

I was going for the flip, kind of like dems and repubs did awhile back. I like your idea better.

Thanks!

The 98 Arkansas Official Game Tread would have been epic.

Over under on how many "bench Tee, Burney Veazey would be able to at least complete a pass" and "Don't even let Phil in the locker room after this sham! Fire him and that fraud Cutcliffe, as soon as the last second ticks off!" posts there would've been...MID first quarter?

I think a young Catbone in 1997 would have posted something like this:

"If we can't beat Florida with Peyton Manning at QB, how are we going to beat them with Tee Martin? Not to mention our defense loses Leonard Little, Terry Fair, Bill Duff and Tori Noel! Let's face reality, we aren't ever winning a National Championship with this staff."

I think that is currently the problem with 2016 catbone. Very young and green and not just with football.

You are forgetting that after that 95 loss to Florida, the whole Vol Nation would have demanded newly appointed DC Chief's head on a platter. Hell, even before the internet Chief caught a lot of heat after that game. 62 points. I remember that game well. That second half is one of my darkest memories as a Vol fan.

I wonder if he would be willing to be our OL coach?

Wish he would - the defensive line could also use help; he's coached those before, too. Maybe just too much patching to actually have a D-line, but they looked like the Keystone Cops trying to get lined up for a play.

I'm far from knowledgeable on football alignment, but that big D-line gap in the middle just looks like an invitation to run up the middle, and apparently it's every bit as porous as it looks.

And don't forget the 1000 posts of "the coaches didn't fumble the ball".

In the 1996 season, after getting rolled by the Gators (gave up 35 points in the FIRST Quarter!!!) for the 4th year in a row the "Fire Fulmer" movement gains momentum...it's clear Fulmer will never get the Vols to the Championship game. The Vols lose to lowly Memphis and fans demand Fulmer be fired and we get a real coach. Most agree he's a good recruiter but a horrible game day coach. After a struggle against lowly Vanderbilt, Fulmer is fired....
