I don't think you read the entire rule book. Certain rules take precedent over others like "the total playing time in a collegiate game shall be 60 minutes". One referee can't just say 'game over, gives signal' at the end of the third quarter and everybody packs up and goes home. I frequently hear refs refer to 4th down as 3rd down or vice versa. All the game rules have to be followed regardless of what the referee does or does not say. Otherwise next time TN plays at Bama the clock operater will just run the clock down to zero if TN spikes the ball with 10 seconds left in the 4th.

Oklahoma vs TX last year had the same situation...clock expired, game was called as being over. Booth review put 1 sec back on the clock for a TX field goal attempt.

The Sooner board went through the same arguments as we are. Bottom line, while the language is vague....infact, the rules do provide the grounds to enable a booth review of the game clock to determine if a play was executed before it expired to end the game, again inspite of what the referee called on the field.

The review can be made, if there is a question about the end of the game ruling. The provision is in the rule book that enabled a review of the last play, and the finding was to the benefit of NC, and 1 sec was added to the game clock.

Limitations on Reviewable Plays
ARTICLE 6. No other plays or officiating decisions are reviewable.
However, the replay official may correct egregious errors, including those involving the game clock, whether or not a play is reviewable.

the issue should also be that on the penalty it negated the clock play so the clock should have started on ready for play...NO WAY they get snap off for fg.
happened in 2 or 3 other games this bowl season where when clocking they had an offensive penalty and it cost them 3-5 seconds in each case

BINGO!...Game over again, this time for good. But sadly, NC was permitted to snap the ball without the Ref pausing over the ball to ensure all subs were in/out. The snap should never have been made...impossible to do in 1 sec.

Vols got screwed by the refs! Howevere, none of this would have happened if the Vols would have taken the clock down to :00 with 1:36 left. NC had either 1 time out or none. 45 seconds needs to be run off the clock for one play. I can't believe that the Vols punted with :32 seconds left in the game. How dumb!

We ran out as much time as we could have. UNC used their two timeouts to stifle that.

I'm mad too, but the refs got every call right except for maybe the catch on the sideline. It really hurts right now, but it wasn't the officials. It's a team loss and a failure to be disciplined.

Yep. I also believe there wasn't even the second left they put on the clock. They show the replay & act like the refs got it right because the qb had the ball in his hand with 1 second on the clock. It's over when the ball hits the ground.

Totally agree. If you hit pause and play repeatedly, you see the ball on the ground in the center's hand with 2 on the clock, during the exchange the clock changes to 1 which means, in the review officials mind, that the exchange was completed and the ball spiked before that 1 second expired. I call BS!
