Appreciate your thought filled response to the question.[...] skill development with the freedom to truly play your game
without a doubt makes tennessee a desired destination for any player who doesn't want to be boxed in
with that said, i would say there's more upside in landing high school recruits moreso than players out of the portal
because most of these frontcourt players in high school today already play in similar systems
they already have the prerequisite skill set and athleticism to fit seamlessly into caldwell's
attracting players that not only fit but make themselves available via the portal is just too unreliable to bank on
caldwell has been very fortunate in that regard to land zee, barker and wolfenbarger in consecutive years
because when it came to adding shooters, the portal didn't bear any fruit for my girls
overall, caldwell's system is made for hybrids like janiah barker, joyce edwards, sarah strong, toby fournier, etc..
and those types, whether it's high school or the portal, are just hard to come by
they're truly unicorns in their ability and luckily this season the lady vols have three #gbo
The desire for the unicorn with size, speed, skill, and versatility is neither new nor exclusive to any “system”. Thats always been everyone’s elusive treasure. No one has ever been eager to “limit” any player who can do it all, as far back as Candace Parker. They’re just extremely hard to find.Appreciate your thought filled response to the question.
I agree. Certainly we'll always be a destination for that big who also has outside shooting ability and handling skills, but who feels under-utilized on her current team. And, yes, those players probably won't show up in the portal with predictable frequency.
I was unaware that more high school girls teams were playing in systems similar to ours, though. Similar in pressure/scoring philosophy? Are they playing more positionless rather than assigned 1-5 roles?
Could you (or anyone) flesh that out?
For bigs, I'm thinking what separates us from many programs would be, not just the freedom, but the desire that they shoot the three with excellence, and not even necessarily from within our half-court offensive sets. The desire for the unicorn with size, speed, skill, and versatility is neither new nor exclusive to any “system”.
