If Peyton is to ever help by being a coach at his alma mater...now is the time

I think the only place Peyton Manning coaches is the NFL. No way does he want to be on the road recruiting every day of the year.

But I also don't think he wants to coach anything other than pee-wee

Bringing Peyton back to coach at the University of Tennessee? Do you seriously think he is going to risk his legendary status for...what? A few million a year? This message board would absolutely melt down from thermonuclear flashbacks of '95 - '97. Steve Spurrier would get more requests for interviews and commercials mocking Peyton's record against Florida. Fans would be calling for his name to be removed from the Locker Room Complex, or the Ring of Honor, or from Peyton Manning Pass. No thank you. I'd much rather revere him forever as a legendary player and VFL than to see him crucified for an upset loss to Vanderbilt.

I've never thought Peyton was gonna come back to Tennessee as a coach and I still don't. Believe it when I see it. He's destined for much grander things IMO than being a position coach on college coaching staff. Furthermore, I hope he never does come back here to coach. He would go from being an icon and all-time Tennessee great and legend to a bum that needs to be run out of town because he called a draw on 3rd and 12. No, no thanks. Let Peyton continue to support the team and program as he currently does while being part owner of an NFL franchise or something.

Case (guy) in point John Majors.....

Just like this country, VN has hit a new low.

Peyton will never coach here.

But now there's hope we have a chance to pull ourselves out of this lowness thrust upon us for the first time in over 60 years ..,PTL. And I think the Vols do too.

I love the fact Peyton is a VFL and represents our school with dignity and pride. What I don't understand is why many think he would be a good coach? I'm not saying he wouldn't but being a great player doesn't always make you a good coach

What about all the kids that attend his camp? Proof he can coach.

It is? Got any data to back it up? It's a camp with instruction on fundamentals. But you can't possibly say that just because a lot of kids go to his camp that it means Peyton is a great coach and would be great as a college coach and/or offensive coordinator.

If he decided to run, Mr. Manning could be governor of Tennessee in 2018 with a clear path to the presidency in 2024. Running mate: Tom Brady?

Coaching football might provide us and him some satisfaction, but would be a waste of his leadership potential, imo.

It's like saying the best marksman in a platoon should be company commander. Sure he is good at something but how does that translate to tactics and strategy?

I see Manning as an Elway type retiree. He's a cerebral suit and tie guy who isn't going to dirty his hands coaching but will likely invest in an NFL franchise at some point. To think he will involve himself on coaching beyond kids camps is looney tunes.

There is no way Butch would have Manning in any capacity, Butch will never be endeared the the way Peyton is.

Bad analogy IMO. The best "Marksman in a platoon" obviously isn't a lock at Commander for tactics and strategy. but; is likely the best candidate to coach and train the others in becoming the best marksman they are capable of being. That is part of what the OP was discussing and you left out. I agree it doesn't mean he would be a great OC or OC advisor. Actually, it doesn't mean he would be a great or good QB coach either as far as that goes. I would venture that he would have more to offer as a QB coach than what we have now.

If Alabama had the same thought process as some on here do then they would not be where they are today. Peyton would be the best thing that could happen to our football program. You can be negative about everything with this football program and keep losing to Saban or you can step up and do what is going to put Tn. on par with the best programs. We can continue to not do anything and stay a mediocre program or reach out and put it back where it was in 1998 when we were National Champs,

I seriously wish people would just move on from the dumb Peyton and Gruden crap. Can anyone give a cogent argument that points to either one of those two being successful at coaching at the college level?

I'm sorry, I don't follow. How many coaches on Alabamas staff are former Alabama football legends? How many are former NFL HOFers?

First of all there is no guarantee that Peyton could have an impact at all. Just because he was a great player doesn't mean he can magically transform other players into great quarterbacks. Why would a retired legend want to spend his time trudging across the country recruiting? Having to tweet recruits all damn day long? Really? You think Peyton is signing up for that sh!t? What happens if coach Jones doesn't want to do what Peyton wants? What do fans think will happen next?

Secondly, I'd be willing to bet Peyton has less than 1% interest in becoming anything other than a head coach at the college level and it's far more likely that if he wanted to even coach at all it would be at the NFL level where the talent is there and you don't have to develop kids which is an ENTIRELY different skill set.

Can he recruit? Somehow, I think he wouldn't settle for a bunch of 3 stars

You forget...247 and Rivals had Peyton at 3 stars, although added a 4th just before Signing Day. Then it was taken away at Peyton's announcement ceremony where he pulled off the Ole Miss cap and put of the orange hat.
