Top Candidates:

1. A buddy of Buzz Peterson
2 Jed's brother
3. Some guy on Cumberland

Face it, that is what we will be left with.

1. He's Young. I think it would be a bad decision to hire a coach (even if proven) that isn't
2. He's a hell of a recruiter. I don't think that's debatable. Not only that but I love the type of player he recruits. He recruits speed and scrappiness.
3. Despite being Conference USA, he wins close games. If there is one thing I am absolutely sick of as a ut fan after this season it's losing close games.
4. He was a major contributor during the 2008-2009 season and I believe because he coached under him can beat Calipari
5. I think for the money this might be our best bet

Josh Pastner is not a good coach. It would be utterly mind-boggling if we hired him.

Was yesterday's game close?

Mark Few isn't leaving Gonzaga. But how well would Mooneys offense set with us? It's pretty much a charged up version of the princeton offense? A little quicker ran. Sounds like you'd have difficulty recruiting top ranked players doing that.

Don't look now, but you are talking about the school that replaced one of our programs winningest football coaches(yes, I know it was time for him to go) with the Al Davis reject that is now with the Trojans and then replaced him with a coach from LaTech with a losing record(I am 100% behind Dooley and think he was the best fit for the job in front of him).

Yah. Getting Mark Few would be major but no way possible he leaves Gonzaga to come to the south.

Donnie Tyndall- Morehead State.
He's turned that program around and had 2 ncaa appearances in the last 3 years. I know its an OVC school, but I have watched them play and he is a good coach. 3-20 win season's in a row. Familiar with the region as far as recruiting.

Surely you are kidding. Tyndall has done a great job at a small OVC school, he had good luck in getting a good player but he certainly is not proven himself sufficiently to take over a major SEC program. Tennessee needs to go after a talented coach with a real knack for recruiting.

I would like to see a legitimate list of candidates...no way we get a Pitino, Self, Barnes type in here.

I think it will probably be another young, mid-major coach.

Here's who I see as some legitimate options:

1) Anthony Grant - if the rumors I have been reading are true and he is that unhappy at Bama, then this would be my first choice.

2) Brad Stevens - would be my second choice. He has reached his peak at Butler IMO and we can pay him a lot more and I would be willing to guess our facilities make Butler's look like a middle school.

3) Gregg Marshall - good, solid coach.

Other options:

Shaka Smart - probably too young and inexperienced, but would be interesting option.

Josh Pastner - see Smart above.

Rick Byrd - like his UT background, but probably too old and from what I've read he is very happy where he is.

I don't really get the fascination with Grant. He's ok. But I think we can do better. The only option on your list I like is Gregg Marshall. Pastner, Byrd, and Smart would be bad hires in my opinion.

I like Grant, but I think Gregg Marshall is the best on that list.

What about Stevens? I think he would be a legit option.

UT is about to experience what Memphis and Arizona experienced 2 years ago. No established coach, regardless of the amount of $$ offered, will jump at the opportunity to follow the most successful coaches at those programs and have to rebuild the program. Plus, at UT, the coach will have to deal with NCAA sanctions/probation. Not going to get a lot of interest from "name" coaches at Big 6 conferences or top tier mid major programs (i.e. Mark Few).

Perhaps, but Memphis is in a weak conference and coaches could have potentially been scared of potential AA issues. Diff between Mem and UT is UT's AA issues are centered on coach and will be lighter with him gone. Don't know for sure that Memphis went after heavyweights other than Pearl. Could be wrong, can't recall. I believe Scott Drew was in the mix but he is no big name. Arizona ended up with Sean Miller, I would happily end up like Arizona.

I know he's a hot name, and he might do great here. I just for some reason don't think he's that great. He walked into a great situation at Butler.

I agree to a certain extent, but think he has proven he can coach at a pretty high level. They were one shot from a national title last year.

I'd love to go for the big name hire but I don't think those opportunities will come up a lot in either football or basketball. Usually proven winners already have great jobs. I think going the mid major route should work out fine.

Hate to say I agree w/ all of this but I don't think it would happen.
