If not Kesling, then who?

Everybody is a critic. Bob is a UT alum and loves the Vols. I have met him and he is aware of the critics. He said he wants UT to win but isn't going to be too much of a homer. That is his style. Some of you who are critics need to step into the pressbox or booth and try to do play-by-play announcing. It isn't easy. I do play-by-play for high school. It isnt as easy as you think.

I’m not so much of a critic, but will pass on getting in the booth and calling a game. I’d rather just watch. Or listen or listen if I have too.

UT needs a play by play guy who is more of a homer

Tim Priest is the ultimate homer as the color analyst. I’d prefer my play by play guy to be professional and more down the middle like Ward was. I despise guys like Larry Munson who constantly used “us” and “we” when describing the games....just awful imho.

It's never easy to follow a legend and he was groomed to be the heir apparent since the get go with his time at JP sports. He was the most logical choice at the time and IMO he has done a good job. Strictly for the detractors, who would you have rather had at the time of replacing Ward? And who would you rather have now?

He's horrible, worst hire UT could have made.

NEVER EVER hire a TV guy as a radio announcer and definitely DO NOT hire a TV News Sports anchor to do radio.

Lets see
Mike Keith
John Wilkerson
Someone with a Radio background calling games

Personally, I would try Andy Kelly. I like a play-by-play guy who has actually played the game and understands the objective of the called-play. Add in an "emotion" guy (Priest or someone similar) to escalate the excitement. And for damn certain eliminate Hubbs!

I see what you are saying, but they work for the University and should be homers to an extent. If you (plural, not you directly) went to said school, "we" is ok. Munson didn't go to UGA. Tim Priest was captain of the '70 Vols. He can be a homer. JMO

Makes the most sense to me.

And he was generally 5 or so seconds behind the play. Not a bad thing but in todays environ with the availability of so much media coverage staying caught up with the play would not have been one of JW's strong point.
Exactly. No shade on Ward, was the best of all time. But today, a lot of folks like me are watching on TV with the volume muted.

I don't need as much from Bob as I did Ward. I just need Bob not to be Gary Danielson

I respectfully disagree.

Yes, Tim does associate with the team by saying "us" and "we" but I don't view him as a homer at all.

He'll subtly criticize play calls, admit we got away with a penatly or point out that we got a favorable spot, etc.

He's excitable when something good or bad happens (which I think balances well with Bob's reserved demeanor) but I think he's as balanced as anyone I've listened to.

Not only was Munson not an alum, he was originally from Minnesota who didn't move South until he was 30. You sure couldn't tell that from his voice though.

Tim Priest is the voice of doom on Tennessee game broadcasts. When Bob hangs it up,I want Tim replaced also.

Munson started college game calling at Vanderbilt was back in the days when hardly any college game were broadcast. I think he also broadcast the minor league baseball gmes for the team in Nashville. He left there and went to Atlanta to become part of the Braves broadcast team with Mel Allen when they moved to Atlanta. In a short time, Georgia lost its football announcer and hired Munson. The rest is history. I think he would have been a good announcer for Tennessee, but his ties with Vanderbilt nitched that from happening. I am glad that he did not come to UT because we would not have gotten John Ward, the GOAT of announcers.

In addition to John Ward, I always admired the style of Jack Cristal, Larry Munson, and Eli Gold. Their baritone gravel voices sound like fall football. Sometimes you find them in your own backyard and sometimes from an obscure town in North Dakota. In an earlier era, I thought Lindsey Nelson was awesome. Regardless of where you find the Voice, you know you have found it when it resonates with the autumn air and has you visualizing a game without seeing it.

I like the Ole Miss play by play announcer David Kellum he's very good

Beth Mowins or Pam Ward. Both are real pros and would truly groundbreaking for college football (Team rather than network) and basketball.
Beth Mowins? No.. just no. The only female voice I want to hear on Saturdays over the radio, is that English gal saying "Natural......Gas".
However, watching UT/LSU basketball yesterday, would almost take Beth Mowins over Dick Vitale. Gosh what crappy options.
