If Martin is to leave this is what we need to do

We aren't any coaches dream job. We aren't any coaches final destination. We are a football school and will always be looked at like that. We are a stepping stone. Even if Marshall does come he won't stay very long IMO. It's sad but true.

Looks like Marshall is a guy we'd go after, per Jeff Goodman.

Jeff Goodman ‏@GoodmanESPN
Gregg Marshall. @TyRuckVFL: @GoodmanESPN If Cuonzo Martin takes the Marquette job, who's some names you see the vols targeting?

Get out the checkbook and go get Gregg Marshall from Wichita State... I don't need to explain why if you have watched college basketball the past couple of years.

Marshall currently makes $1.75 million, so it would probably take something in the neighborhood of $2 million a year for at least 5 years to lure him away and UT just doesn't have a track record of paying its basketball coaches that much. If CCM leaves, UT is probably in the mid-major market again and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle, again.

I think UT would absolutely go $2 million over 5 for Marshall if he was willing

I heard a rumor that we were going after Greg Marshall if CM takes the Marquette job. It is all up to him. He pays us 1.3 million and we hand that along with another 1.2 million to Greg Marshall. We get him for half price the first season then 2.5 per season for the next three of a four year contract. Overall it costs us 8.7 million for four years or about 2.2 a season to get the best coach available.

If we can't pay at least the same amount as Auburn paid for CBP there's something seriously wrong. Did you see the stands in the last Auburn/Tn game at Auburn? Couldn't have been more than a couple of thousand.

If we are willing to pay Zo up to $1.9 to retain him for say 5 years, why couldn't we pay Marshall 2.25 for 5 years?

Martin's buyout will be $1.3m....the difference of Marshall's 2.25 to Zo's 1.9 is 325k each year over 5 years. That's $1.625m more we would pay Marshall over 5 year than Zo....but you're gonna get $1.3m from Martin for his buyout. So it costs you 325k more for Marshall over 5 years than Martin?

Tennessee can't afford that?

if he leaves i blame the big orange fan-base and websites like this that give a platform to idiots who post about something they have no idea what they are talking about.

Could you take the internet any more seriously? Here is a clue, not a single member of the AD, coaching staff(s), or boosters make a fraction of a choice based one a single word typed on these message boards. Business happens in the real world, internet message boards are not the real world.

Internet message boards are here for those "idiots" to come and talk to each other and argue with each other about these type of things, because those involved in the decisions have ZERO desire to discuss those types of matters with us.

I think a lot of people on here are selling Tennessee short on our basketball tradition & our willingness and ability to pay for a good coach. We have the nicest arena, which is second-largest and we have the second largest average attendance in the SEC. Besides Florida's recent success we have the second best tradition in the SEC as well. We're not exactly devoid of BB history.
I hope Cuonzo stays but if not, I think we will get somebody good.

Well you would also have to factor in Marshall's buyout which is 500k according to something I read earlier. So it would be closer to 825k than 325, but I would still think that would be affordable.

Good catch, but still...

$825k over 5 years? That's nothing considering the revenue you get if Marshall has half the success he did at Wichita State.

If Marshall can take a mid-major to a final four he could do that here for sure. We have the facilities, fan base (hopefully no more petitions) and money.

I'm just not sold on coaches that win at schools like Smart, Stevens, and Marshall have done.

Reaching back to back NCG's against the same level of competition everyone else had to face should sell anyone on Stevens. Plus they played a solid, national schedule outside of the Horizon.
