If Kyle Phillips will truly

Actually there’s so much hybridizing going on in today’s game sometimes it’s hard to actually identify a 3-4 or a 4-3. The days of establishing a set defense and staying it no matter what happens are gone ..... in some 3-4 the two outside man set the corners and in some 3-4 they don’t itjust depends on the back four.... so size can be a variable in all defenses especially now days especially in down and distance .... at least that’s been my observations in the last few years

Yep!

That's why coaches just say 'multiple" a lot of the times.

The key is somehow being able to stop the run and generate with 4 guys or less. You can do this in all base defenses. It really depends on the skill level of the players.

Phillips needs to become a maniac in the weight room this off-season. His natural burst and bend is already there.

He just needs more size and strength.

So if i understand you correctly, if Kyle dedicates himself to becoming a good player, he will become a good player?

Groundbreaking stuff.

Typical FF response. It really is OK to say something just to get the conversation started. Forums comments do not have to live up to some rocket science standard.

I've always believed in Phillips and I still do.

He was a huge get when we signed him but he seems to aways get injured.

That's not his fault but if he could get a solid year in the weight room and stay healthy where he could seriously work on his craft I still think he can become a day 1 or 2 draft pick.

Going to a 3-4 might be the best thing to happen to him with Pruitt and staff pushing him.

He could be a huge help to us this season.

VFL...GBO!!!

There were many players throughout the past five recruiting classes that seemed much more suited to the 3-4 and it’s variations. A major exception was Derek Barnett, who’s a 4-3 weakside DE all the way and we benefited. Then you get to some of THE REST. Chris Weathered was a 3-4 OLB without a spot. With any kind of exposure, he’s on a NFL roster imo. Bituli is an ILB with athleticism but not a 4-3 MLB mindset...as opposed to Kirkland with the mindset but not the carcass to withstand the constant pounding. ILB’s are allowed more freedom to pursue with the DL in front of them committed to holding up the point of attack and occupying blockers. K-Mac never had that extra pass rushing burst, so it was a double whammy for the poor fools behind him. Kongbo was too slow at DE and too lithe at DT. Ideal numbers for 3-4 DE. Kyle Phillips was hopelessly mired in that 4-2-5. He wasn’t explosive at DE but had some push on the inside when the coaches forced that move...another 3-4 DE marker. He’s been wasted here so I’m pulling for that breakthrough.

Prototypical defensive end in a 3-4 scheme is 270-290. JJ Watt 285. Nose Tackle 310-330. Your linebackers tend to be 235-255. Kyle Phillips in my opinion is kind of in a weird spot. Probably a step slow and to big for an olb and maybe a little to small and not strong enough for a defensive end. Now you can make someone stronger in a few months not sure about how much faster.

I really believe if Kyle will truly dedicate himself to the weight room and busting his butt to learn this new defensive scheme, he can move into an early round draft choice. He has the fastest 1st step of any D Lineman on the team. If he gets his strength way up and puts on 10-15 he is prototypical NFL DT in a 3-4

He was better than Kongbo last year but Jones wouldn't play him over Kongbo, it would make me so mad, didn't make sense. He would do that all the time

Yeah, I dedicated myself to developing a great 25 foot jump shot and growing a ten inch Johnson.
Neither happened.

The outside 2 down linemen in the 3-4 are usually referred to as DEs. I guess some call them DTs, but where I came from they were DEs.

I have seen alignments where LDEs referred to as DTs in a 3-4, the DT position as NT, and RDE remains RDE... Think it just depends on few various factors, but I don't think either way is technically wrong...

I don't care if they run 3-4 or 4-3 as long as we have a front seven. That 4-2-5 crap sucked.

I was actually going to try to explain this as my 2nd post ever so thank you for doing it. They are still DEnds. 3-4 DEnds have to be bigger and more versatile to stop the run and pass rush.

I've heard a few older coaches who ran the 3-4 call it the 5-2, because they considered the outside backers defensive ends. So the confusion is understandable.

This is exactly what Kevin Dodd is for the Titans. I could not understand why they picked a 4-3 DE with a slow first step to play OLB in the NFL.
