If Knowles system takes a few years this tells me

some of his worst defensive rankings were still much better than what we fielded this year. a mediocre defense would've put us in the playoffs. hopefully he can come in and make some year one improvements and get this thing headed in the right direction.

Sorry, but this is just dumb.

Any athlete, any coach expects to “win now” every time they take the field.
I agree. Maybe I'm reading the OP take incorrectly, but if our litmus test with anything is "to finish in the top half of the SEC" then I'm out. With our resources, we should be competing for the SEC title every single year. I don't expect to win it every year, but being eliminated from CFP contention on November 1st should be the floor for this program.

Marginally better Defense probably gets you 2 more wins.. I don't think anyone should expect Knowles to have top 5 Defense in the first year. We should expect to see them at least do fundamentals better, and get off the field from time to time on 3rd down. The bar was set low this year, won't take much to be better next year..That schedule is rough though..

Is he expected to coach in bowl game? Understand he cannot run his D but at least manage what we run maybe?
If not who is going to be acting DC.

Since Illinois is in the B1G with Penn State, I'm sure Knowles has at least taken a long look at their offense, even though they weren't on the PSU schedule this year. He'll probably have some insights for preparation.

Whether he'll have enough time to know which players can execute pressure well in specific situations might be the issue with him calling the D in the bowl.

It does no good to dial up "the right play" if your DB can't actually execute that play well because his skill set is limited or if bringing pressure leaves another guy on an island he lacks the skills to defend.
I’m assuming he and Inge will be Co DCs for this game

Im just going off of what others who would know way more than me say. Its mostly in reference to next year specifically. He's not worried about next year being a POTENTIAL struggle again, where more unrest could grow. It just didnt strike me as a "gotta win next year" hire. Could he be such a great hire they win next year? Definitely. He's just fine with taking the risk.
I'd agree with you. We are looking at an unclear QB situation and no clear help (yet) at DB, safety, or LB. If we start Faizon we need to assume he will be successful but with limits. Those limits would need a 2024 level defense to improve over this years performance.

The silver lining is Knowles has done well no matter where he has been. My hope is that he can clean up the fundamental issues that bit us all year. That alone would improve our defensive performance.

That’s is true, but the 8-4 was because the offense was predicted to take a step back. If we knew last summer the offense would be first in the SEC, I would have predicted 11-1. I think that is why people were disappointed with 8-4 with that offense and the defense expectations from 2024.
Nailed it!

I feel the exact opppsite. Heupel is willing to make the uncomfortable change to fire Banks, passed on an known assistant he has history with in Ryan Walters, and goes for the bigger hire in Knowels.

With the hire we are allocating more money to the DC position and therefore higher expectations. Also, Heupel has yet to sign an extension this year despite the coaching carousel and opportunitues to leverage for a higher pay. I think he is more interested in proving his worth as a coach and loves the competition. Otherwise he woukd have entertained Penn State.
