Fans frame it as reward and punishment, because we just want to see improvement on the field.

I think coaches see it as repetitive behavioral training, because they know they'll need dependable, error-free performance from the QB position if they want to realistically pursue championships. Reliable ball distribution is job one for the QB Pruitt wants to develop.

When you're training a young QB, you don't want him repeating mistakes. Repitition is learning. You want something in the back of his brain to be screaming "Bad things happen when you throw into that coverage!" the next time his eyes see it. And if the defender muffs the interception so there's no turnover, then missed playing time becomes the "bad thing" for the young QB to remember.

I'm pretty sure Pruitt sees every repeated mistake as more time that will be lost in practice un-learning that mistake.

As for why JG plays so much, I'm guessing they have a pretty good catalog now of the types (or conditions under which) JG is prone to err, and probably weigh that in the play calling. Having JG ready to play allows them to keep Shrout on a short, training leash.

I wouldn't blame either of them, obviously Pruitt is going to ride JG until he decides to leave the program. Even when they do play they know if they make one mistake the Pruitt's golden boy is coming back in.

one qb has a broken hand, one has a head injury and one has a rifle arm and is learning the game. Vols are winning and have a wildcat Jennings that is tough in short yardage. All are getting playing time and contributing. UAB is not a pushover opponent so the 30 - 7 win looks excellent to me regardless of which qb played in which series. Shrout is getting meaningful playing time and give the team and staff a break for building depth and winning some ball games in convincing fashion. JG looked darn good to me last night. Maurer was forced into action against top sec opponents before he was physically ready and may need a lengthy recovery period. JG, JT and JJ in wildcat are doing well and I could care less about the rotation.

If I can’t play as a true freshman or redshirt freshman, even if I’m injured, I’m leaving my school! Uh huh, sure you would. I bet you have a headache this morning, but at least you got an extra hour of sleep last night.

Maurer might as well shut it down for the year. That’s the best thing for his long term health and the well being of the team.

Shrout got multiple opportunities. Sure he got pulled for some bad decisions for a three year starter but he also got back into the game to get some experience as well. All you can ask for is opportunities as a player. You get pulled you learn from your mistakes.

If Shrout was benched for that then there is a severe double standard in the coach’s room, because JG three an interception in the game. I believe the announcer said it best last night from his conversations with the coaches. He said that when Shrout was in it limited the plays they called and how they called the game. I personally don’t believe we win against MSST or USC if JG starts an continued playing the entire ball game in those games. Just my opinion.

Really? It should tell you everything you need to know about these two that we have JG playing with one hand. Neither one of them is ready to play. Maurer gets a concussion every single time somone breathes to hard near him and Shrout sees the field just as bad if not worse than JG.

Chill. Maurer played against the best teams in the SEC not scrub competition. Not like he got hurt playing Ga St. Didn’t need Maurer to beat UAB. However we do need him to beat KY and Mizzou coming up. Shrout was always a project. He can’t read coverages yet. JG wasn’t challenged and his check down tendencies and experience won the UAB game for us

You know nothing about football or the mentality that JG has shown through all the s*** he's been through the past couple weeks. 3 weeks, a month ago I was his biggest critic. Do you not see how he has laid it on the line for the orange?

This was a game Pruitt wanted to win without Maurer. You folks are going to be glad going down the home stretch that JG was given a game to win, he'll be needed as backup going down the stretch, this was a confidence booster for him, unless he visits this board. A visitor coming to VN would think we lost last night.....

I had no problem with him playing JG in this game and letting Maurer rest a little more, but I did think Shrout should have a gotten more reps than he did in the game. We were up by 30, I expected him to play much more in the 2nd half. But it isn't the biggest deal in the world. We are going to need the young ones down the stretch no doubt about that. GBO!
