If Heupel's offense averages more points, will it keep fans happy?

Fans are so starved for offensive production, even a decent amount of first downs will keep us happy the first year. Anyone saying they aren’t content with 36 points a game and a 5-7 record in year one is lying IMHO.

With that said I do think we are probably 6-6 or 7/5 IF we average 35+ points scored in year one.

Agreed. I had mentioned earlier in the forum that I created this poll just to highlight and show the unrealistic expectation of many fans. Some fans will never be happy and completely do not comprehend the task at hand with the Sanctions and how much JP has screwed this program.

Wasn't he hired as an assistant? He wasn't hired as a coordinator/coaching position so he could still stay on or leave if he so chooses. It doesn't hurt our coaching staff search. Honestly, this was a smart move by the administration to lock him up in an assistant role that way if Heupel did want to keep him.

Yea but what is his buyout. As an official assistant and if CJH don’t want him running the defense then I would assume he wants to bring his own guys in which would leave Steele out of football dealings.

He is going to be just fine, offensive mind and can put up the points. Some of our fans are out of their minds and think Tennessee is some 1970 powerhouse and coaches should crawl to be here. Just not the case, lot of work has to be done to get back on top but you have to be able to score points, and at least we have a guy that has done than.

Something tells me you need to watch more college ball than UT football. The NCAA avg points scored a game is around 30.5 pts a game. FYI, Heupel UCF team avg. 39 pts last year with a 6-4 record, including the bowl game. UCF doesn't play Bama, Florida, Georgia who always hang point on us, they just let off the gas in the final quarter or two. KY, Mizzou is always capable of hanging over 35 on us and have done it. We got Ole Miss on the schedule next year, you don't think Kiffen can hang over 35 on us? Lastly, we have no idea what SC will look like. Have you even taken into account what our defense looked like this year and the attrition after the JP firing?

Josh Heupel 28-8 (12-1, 10-3, 6-4) Heupel played a tougher schedule and was better offensively in the NCAA than Kiffy. But you and most of VN wanted Kiffin.

True but my point is that assistants are just that, Steele can do a Lyle and bring Heupel is Coffee or JH can find other roles for him if they so choose not to give him his buyout. Something tells me Steele will be part of UT for the next two years. Why give him a contract knowing you might be letting your HC go. Of course, I could be off but something tells me this administration had something in the works prior to JP being fired.

Average points per game is not a measure of any kind of success.

What will happen with the defense? If Tennessee scores 40 points a game and gives up 50, what have we really accomplished?

You are telling me to do research when you yourself just threw out the end of season records? I gave you the NCAA average, which you probably didn't even know. TN scoring average was somewhere around 20-21 points a game this year. You proved my point, Kiffin was coaching Ole Mississippi this year, did you not watch that offense? They would have beaten UT badly this year. You know, again, if you did the research you would know that there is more to football than the end of the season records. 20 something points a game doesn't cut it. FYI our opponent's avg. 32.5 pts a game on us this season, if you watched all the games you would know that many of the teams could have scored more but some coaches believe in mercy. By the way, Ole Miss avg. 37 points a game this year and went 5-5. So back to your original post, scoring 35 points a game doesn't equate to an easy 8 win season. Good day sir.
