If Heupel's offense averages more points, will it keep fans happy?

Will fans be content with UT avg. 35+ points a game but having a losing season under Heupel?

Many of us fans lose perspective during these coaching searches, and some have unrealistic expectations given the circumstances. Heupel may not be the sexy hire, but he can bring something lacking at UT, and that is an offense. I am taking an even-keel approach. I want nothing more than UT just to be competitive again, regardless of the record at the season's end. These past few seasons, we watched a team that most often couldn't come back from a 2 TD deficit, which is problematic. So I ask Volnation:

If we win, sure but if we still lose, then the discussion will be back to get a defensive coach.

Needs to be over 30 ppg each year.

I'm generally warm to the hire. I actually like that White and Heupel have actually worked together.

Now we get to see if they can use a wealth of resources they've never seen to take UT to the top tier.

Last season showed you need to score a lot of points and get a D that can slow some others down. We have neither at the moment so getting points will be a good place to start

If we average over 35 a game but have a losing season, we would need a massive defensive coach overhaul.
I do not disagree, but the point I am making is that people complain about the Heupel hire but fail to realize his offense has been in the top 10, and I believe 5 over the last few years. I am just gauging fans' expectations. The offense keeps a team in the game. Look at the Big 12, they haven't played defense in decades. At least with an offense, there is potential for an upset. A team can't upset anyone scoring less than the NCAA average.

Losing with a lot of offense is what we did in 2012. It was probably more fun than any other season we've had since except for maybe 2016. It also got Dooley fired.

If we go 5-7 and have a top 4 offense in the SEC I think fans would be happy.

The final grade on this hire is gonna be who he brings in for the defense. Rumor is that it won't be Steele. Don't like that.

Dumb voting pole. If we get to 35+ points we will win 8+ games immediately.

Kiffin scored a lot of points, went 5-5 and a lot people wanted him. Not sure what the difference would be.

You know QBs WRs and RBs will want to play here but about that defense. That’s what I want to see shape out. I believe In his offense.

For this season as long as we compete I’d say most people will be happy. By compete I mean beat the teams you’re supposed to, keep it close against superior opponents and maybe pull a shock signature win. A 7 win season would be a nice start for JH.

So Steele don’t officially start the season and hired on a 2 year deal for $400K a year and you mean to tell me we gonna owe a buyout to him also. This is beyond comical. I am in the wrong profession!

Wasn't he hired as an assistant? He wasn't hired as a coordinator/coaching position so he could still stay on or leave if he so chooses. It doesn't hurt our coaching staff search. Honestly, this was a smart move by the administration to lock him up in an assistant role that way if Heupel did want to keep him.

Something tells me you need to watch more college ball than UT football. The NCAA avg points scored a game is around 30.5 pts a game.
That means nothing. If you give up more points than you score. It will all depend on his defense hire.

Love Knoxville callers over the years....."why can't we do what UCF does, they do more with less...why can't we do that with what we have"

Tennessee: Next Coach former UCF Coach

Fans: WTF

FYI, Heupel UCF team avg. 39 pts last year with a 6-4 record, including the bowl game. UCF doesn't play Bama, Florida, Georgia who always hang point on us, they just let off the gas in the final quarter or two. KY, Mizzou is always capable of hanging over 35 on us and have done it. We got Ole Miss on the schedule next year, you don't think Kiffin can hang over 35 on us? Lastly, we have no idea what SC will look like. Have you ever taken into account what our defense looked like this year and the attrition after the JP firing?
