If TN is going to make a change at head coach, they cannot afford to bring in some up and comer...They need to go ahead and bite the bullet and pay a big name coach with plenty of experience and credibility. If Bama can pay Saban 4 million per year, then there is no reason why TN can't make similar move to bring in someone like Gruden. Similar to Saban at Alabama, Gruden could come in and instantly make strides in recruiting simply based on who he is and what he's done. TN cannot take a chance on someone who will not have that instant credibility. The football program is TN's cash cow and MH better make sure he doesn't send the program into a continuing downward spiral by hiring the wrong guy. Pay a big name the money and lets start competing for championships again!!!!!

I don't see us firing Fulmer, paying his buyout ($5.5 million), and then hiring someone for $4 million/year. Where does the money come from? We cannot afford to do that.

How did the "up and comer" approach work out for Ohio State and Georgia?

Exactly why not? Money talks. IF MH would get up off his arse and do something we may just see it happen.

I would like Muschamp as the HC working the defense and letting Gus Malzahn run the offense. We have the money for both.

Why does everyone always assume that TN cannot afford to pay top money for a head coach? IMO TN can't afford not to do so. Heck TN has the highest recruiting budget in the country along with one of the largest stadiums. There is plenty of money coming into this program to make a bold move. The buyout would be payable over a 4 year period. TN wouldn't have to come up with the 5 million all at once.

For a couple of mil, Fulmer might leave on his own if he has no support from fans or the ath dept.

I'm not saying something doesn't need to change. Just remember the old saying...

"Careful what you ask for, You just might get it."

Point being, even with a big name/up-and-comer/whatever, there are no guarantees. Mike Shula ring a bell? And while I can't be specific on the "proven" coach, I'm sure there are examples on that as well.(Spurrier perhaps at SC?)

People have stated that it can't get any worse. Wanna bet?

This isn't an argument for or against CPF. Just sayin...

You have a good point, but TN has to recruit nationally. Its more difficult to bring in good players at TN than in Athens or Columbus. A big name coach will be able to bring blue chip players in on his name alone. I don't see an up and comer being able to do that at TN.

If AD's followed your logic, no one would ever make a coaching change. When it's painfully obvious that a coach's time has past, you have to pull the trigger and not be afraid of what might happen. Besides, it can get worse with this staff as well.

Good post, i agree Gruden or Cowher.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 3-1. If they continue to win, what makes you think we'll have any shot at getting Jon Gruden?

Jesus H Christ. How many disclaimers does someone need to put on a post around here? Did you read the first or last line of my post?

I don't know that we have a shot, but it doesn't hurt to go after him. It is true that he has a history with TN, even if it was brief, not to mention the family connection with his wife. If TN throws enough money at him, why wouldn't he want to come here? In college, the coaches are like rock stars... In the NFL, they are one bad season away from getting canned.

Brian Billick.

Hah, funny you mentioned him. We were talking about billick earlier during the titans game. Could you imagine that arrogance on the hill. Makes spurrier in his prime look humble.

I want that arrogance. The Vols need swagger and confidence more than anything else IMO

Brett Favre will probably be available at the end of the year. You don't have to be a good (proven)football coach to have the ability to coach.
