If Cam stays, how filthy will this defense be next year?

If Cam came back and everyone stayed healthy, that defense being only top 20 would be a coaching failure. That's a top 5 defense in terms of talent.

Hell, the defensive line may be the best in the nation next year.

I think Cam stays so he gets a full year of all the attention like Hargreaves got this year and will then be a first round pick.

DE: Derrick Barnett/Kyle Phillips/Latroy Lewis
DT: Kahlil McKenzie/Alexis Johnson
DT: Shy Tuttle/Derrick Brown (hopefully)/Kendall Vickers
DE: Corey Vereen/Darrell Taylor

WLB: Jalen Reeves-Maybin/Quarte Sapp
MLB: Darrin Kirkland Jr./Kenny Bynum
SLB: Austin Smith/Cortez McDowell

CB: Cam Sutton/Micah Abernathy
CB: Justin Martin/Emmanuel Moseley
NB: Rashaan Gaulden/Malik Foreman
FS: Todd Kelly Jr./Nigel Warrior
SS: Stephen Griffin/Evan Berry

For the first time in a long time we'll have experienced talent starting across the board. And true freshmen are gonna need to be special to break into the 2 deep.

I think this can be a top 20 defense nationally if we keep Cam and land some stud recruits like Nigel Warrior and Derrick Brown.

I will believe it when I see it. Just a few short weeks ago, I was reading about how great and nasty our D was going to be this year.

Then our players started going down with injuries, one by one.

Then we started playing games.

And yet we were two 4th down stops from being 10-2.

We were actually very close to being as good as the optimists thought so it wasn't a bad call.

And yet our defense is in the bottom half of the SEC in total defense and 70th in the country. You don't get to say "what if"....we're talking about what is. Not only has our defense not been nearly what so many said it would be, we're actually considerably lower ranked nationally (37th last year, 70th this year) this year than last year.

This thread is full of some hilarious comments, especially the negative ones. So because the secoondary has struggled this year, that automatically means they will next year. Every college football team has the ability to improve except Tennessee right? There is absolutely no way that our secondary can get better. Typical VN.

We are averaging the same amount of points per game given up by the D as we did in 2014.....and 2013. What makes you think 2016 will be that much different?

Also an outside chance we get Maggitt and OG Jackson back next year on medical redshirts.

O'Brian not listed but he will be better and a dependable 2-3 deep.

We will be better next year w/o Cam in my opinion. Need team players, not self promoting "stars". Wish him well in the pros.

Finally someone sees our D for what it is. This D needs a lot of work to be considered good. Our defensive backfield is poor at taking proper angles, tackling, and getting their assignments right. Far too many breakdowns in those areas this year.

We will be better without him? Lol. And Cam is a self promoter? Is this a joke?

Was just gonna post very similar sentiments. You typically don't lose your best DB and one of the best players on the team who's also an excellent leader and get better.

Don't forget about Dillon Bates. Have a feeling he will ball out once completely healthy. With our DL fully healthy our secondary should benefit tremendously.
Dobbs4Heisman has already proven himself to be a racist. He would never put a white player on the 5 deep, much less the 2 deep.

I think our D had major potential to be nasty this year. It even has been at times. Losing Maggitt really hurt. Among others. The glaring MLB problem was just killer. Hopefully that's shored up now. Barring injury.

The same crap is said year after year. We always think "next year" how awesome we are gonna be because this player or that player will be here. I still see our secondary as being trash next year unless Butch lands a couple dead ringer freshman. Cam is going to the NFL so don't waste your energy wishing he's not.

I would wait till the season ends before doing the stat comparison. I'm sure those defensive stats will improve greatly considering we're playing 3 of the 4 worst offensive teams we play all year over the next 3 weeks.

Yeah I'm really hoping Bates can give us some good special teams/defensive snaps next year. Would hate to see him buried on the depth chart after 2 years in the program.[/Q

i think hes gonna take over for maybin when he leaves

bates, kirkland, mcdowell/berry LBs

I see austin smith growing into a DE

I know that a lot of people are aghast and pi$$ed off when other Vols fans point out what you just did, but it's just the truth. Our defense has at times played very well, but mostly has been pretty porous this year, beginning with the BGSU game. They've been a poor tackling team and historically bad on 4th down. Just is what it is and we're gonna have to get much better if we're ever gonna challenge for championships.

Maybe we can crack the top 50 or so...yay!!!!!

I don't like Tennessee's defensive coordinator.

We'll see what happens to Tennessee's defensive rankings after Vanderbilt and Missouri.

The "numbers" may be worse next season because a lot of offenses in this conference are going to get better, even if it's by accident.

So this is why Frank Beamer is stepping down at VA TECH. We are going to kill them!

Also who says CBJ isn't building? That is proof that we haven't seen since the Fulmer years!

You should love our coordinator - without him you have a loss at home versus Tennessee
