I think the ultimate solution isn’t to have entire states leave as America’s division isn’t between Red States and Blue States as much as it is Blue big cities versus Red everywhere else. I would say let LA, San Fran, Portland, and Seattle all secede as modern day City States. They would lose their votes in the electoral college and the Senate; but they could avoid federal taxation (and funding) and try to run their own affairs using their utopian fantasy principles to their heart’s content

As others have stated, we are better with them. But they are free to go, and should be. They do have some challenges that would make that move very unwise.

Their problem is multi faceted. Earthquakes, fires, drought etc are issues. They have a great economy but that economy would take a huge hit. The insurance issues loom big. They're extremely liberal with taxpayer money and programs.

All that combined and the inevitable natural disaster could decimate their economy with no US federal backing and response. They would be extremely stupid to do this........ But it is Cali, they could get well decide to do this.

Technically, they were a spoil of war. Mexico ceded California to us after we beat their ass in the Mexican American War.
