then who else would be a leading candidate?

I think that Brady Hoke (Ball State) is doing a good job with a limited resources-type program.

Bronco Mendenhall (BYU) has turned their program around.

Chris Peterson (Boise) has been mentioned on several posts.

Will Muschamp (Texas) also has been mentioned.

Would love to hear what other names we can speculate about.

There's no reason to do that

I dont see UT missing out on all 3 of Gruden, Kiffin, or Davis. One of those will be our coach by Christmas, IMO.

And if by some freak way it isn't Gruden or Kiffin, then it will go to Brewster, Patterson and Leach. Patterson will probably end up at K State, but the other 2 would jump at the chance to come here.

Butch won't be coming here, Gruden is Tenns first choice, and if he declines Kiffin will be our man. This is the way I see it after all the rumors I have heard.

There's no way Kiffin gets past us. He will take this job in a heartbeat.

I thought Kiffen wanted Washington?

Why in the world would he pick UW over TN? I can see him taking it if they pay a LOT more, or UT gets Gruden instead......but they program is in need of a LOT more work than TN. He would be in a much weaker conference though. I would imagine Oregon and USC have most of the good talent on lock down in that are as well.

I still think Davis is a viable option. In that blurb on ESPN, he never came out and said he wasnt interested.....he answered like any good HC would in the middle of a successful season at his current school.

All 3 won't decline.
I predict whoever is approached first will decline. And yes Kiffen wants Washington as his #1 gig. He's from the West Coast and had already established himself there. Don't forget UW used to be a powerehouse so who's to say Kiffen can't turn it back into one like USC?

I'm hoping for a big hire. But if the big names (Davis, Gruden, etc.) we like do not come to UT, we have to be prepared to accept someone down the list. It may end up being like the UK basketball coaching search. Every UK fan had their sights set on Billy Donovan, Rick Barnes, Thad Matta and so on. UK fans were absolutely dejected when they found out Donovan was not coming, but when Gillispie (the third or fourth guy down the list) was hired and reality sunk in, they were cautiously optimistic and now they are pumped about what he has done in less than two years.

We need to stop worrying, because there is more coaching talent out there than EVER before. It will work out. 20 years ago it was Jimmy Johnson's, Barry Switzer's and Lou Holtz' world and everyone else got the leftovers. Those days are gone.

If Kiffin wanted the UW job he would be announced tomorrow.

I remember when Gruden took the Bucs to the Super Bowl and the media did a story about how the man wakes up at 3:30am every morning to go to work. Makes me feel real lazy for hitting the snooze button 5 times every morning at 5:30. I hope he will be waking up in Knoxville next fall.

I have reservations about people like Chris Peterson (Boise). He can coach an exciting offense, but not sure he can recruit the south.
