If Butch can coach on Saturdays...

Saturday coaching proved to be a weakness this season.

I do believe that Butch completed his SEC OJT this season though. I don't believe that will be a weakness 2016.
not disagreeing. but the title of the thread is ridiculous. it implies he can't coach at all. which is erroneous.

it also implies it's the only thing needing improved upon, also erroneous.

I know it's unlikely, but if we split with Bama, there is a possibility of a third meeting. How epic would that be?

You know everyone gripes about his in game coaching, but what he did was the same as what 75% of other coaches would do. Most coaches only rush three on 4th and 14. A lot kick the FG from the one, and I've never been an advocate of going for two until the last five min.'s of the game; most times it comes back to bite you, because most teams don't make the conversion. My only gripe would be the use of time outs, and giving it to AK rather than Hurd from the one against OK. For the record I would rush more than three, but I'm not a big time coach either.

We should be in the play-offs this season.

We just signed 3 6* recruits in Cam, Kam, and JRM.

We have a legit Heisman senior at QB who can build airplanes.

Shoop gone Shoop.

The trip to College Station looks less daunting.

I think with what Bama lost, we can beat them once in Knoxville and once in Atlanta. They may not even make it to Atlanta and they are the only West team that can hurt us.

If Kirby Smart is a head coach, it might be Georgia standing in our way. He probably isn't a head coach though - would have jumped sooner.

If we lose to Florida again, may as well mothball the program. It would be a "Dooley at Lexington" moment.

The only unknown is Saturday coaching and the WRs. If Butch grew (like I think he did) this season, I can only see one loss at most before the SECCG and play-offs.

Surely this must be expectation, no?

Such a dumb, tired narrative. When you go 9-4 and finish in the Top 25, and completely resurrect a dead program in the process, I think that is proof that you can "coach on Saturdays."

This...not to mention the fact he had the youngest team in CFB.

We will win the NC next year, and these same people will be complaining about how it was done. "A great coach wouldn't have to even play the games, all the other teams would just forfeit"

Jones coaches plenty on Saturdays, just not very well at times.

Anything short of an SEC East title next season will be a huge letdown.

The division contenders are in shambles right now compared to the Vols. Florida needs a QB and had losses to the NFL and graduation. Georgia is in a transition year. Missouri and USC are messes in pretty much every phase.

"Game day coaching" is over valued on here. Certainly you could point to a timeout here or there, or when to kick a field goal/ go for it. Those would look pretty bad in a vacuum, but I guarantee if you kept up with other teams as much as ours, you could find the same issues with their coaches. Furthermore, the 40 or 50 hours that Butch coached on game days this year was infinitesimal compared to what he did the other 352 days.

Well, Team 119 would have won the East with better Saturday coaching.

I would have liked to have seen the Barnett / Maggitt tag team equivalent of Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik though....

I thought you said Butch and Debord were like Volkoff and the Iron Sheik...

The biggest coaching problem there was the season was the 4th down defense . That guy is gone now

The other bad play calls , bad decisions , I don't necessarily consider abnormal and don't in every case consider to having ' lost ' a game .

For instance , it you watch the NC game with a discerning eye . Saban made so many miscues and tactile errors, most notable was his choice of defenses against Clemson's QB which was in the realm of stupid and yet they won the game . Look at our bowl game . Did you see some mistakes ? They were there , but we still won the game.

There are coaching mistakes and bad penalties in every game , win or lose . Most of the time , these things are labeled the 'cause' . In reality the 'cause' is that one team did not make as many plays as the other

Weak coaching doesn't get you to where we were in the instances I'm sure you're referring to. Questionable calls that had me, as well, asking wtf doesn't constitute weak coaching.

Also, maybe semantics but it suggests CBJ/staff had no hand in getting us there, he's only accountable when it doesn't work out.

So funny that we haven't won an SEC title for 18 years, including three other coaches, but now the demand is for Butch to win one in his fourth season or else.

Same goes for national titles. We've won 1 in 70 some odd years, but that is part of the demand from some.

With our past history of falling short, how did this fan base become so entitled?

Instead of demanding certain results, how about we expect a team that is competitive with every team on the schedule (again) and that we close out some of the wins we left on the table this season. If our players do that, then we absolutely have a chance for championshipS (plural). I think we absolutely have a reasonable shot at winning it all with some good breaks. But, so do several other programs. Only one can win it.

128 teams and you're certain that Vols finish #1? It takes luck to win it all... If Arkansas doesn't beat Ole Miss, Bama doesn't even play in SEC Championship... just sayin

You're correct. We're going to be very good but we will need luck as well. Pretty much every team that wins it all has to have some luck.

Exactly! Vols picked by Vegas as 7 1/2 game over under wins in 15.. They won 9! Vols picked third in SEC east by sportswriters, they finish second! Some people need to cool their jets a bit on what their demands are..

Bingo.
I "expect" even more improvement.
Not bashing the OP for being optimistic but outside of Orange fans, no one has expectations of a (roughly) ranked 10-15 team to win it all.
We might!, but expectations usually lean towards those in the top 5 or so. It's actually kinda the root of "expectations".
