If Barnes were to get offered by UCLA...

I think Barnes took our job with the intent for it to be his last job, but if UCLA threw the same offer at him that they did Calipari...I don’t think they would do that, but he’d at least have to think about it if they did. No way UT can pay $8 million for a basketball coach right now.

I’d be extremely upset to lose Coach. With that said, Rick is home and ain’t going anywhere!
GBO!!

Let him go. We can hire Bruce back!!! He would be able to recruit like a madman here after a FF appearance. BUT... we are UT and that will never happen in our Holier than Thou culture in Kville.

Hard to imagine UCLA team praying to Jesus before tip.
We live in a different world today where, the players and their parents run the show based not on what's best for the team but what's best for them. I would never see the CRB culture being accepted in LA, Bruce on the other hand would fit like a glove, a very dirty one but still a glove.

I think if UCLA doesn’t have a coach by the end of this week, Pearl could emerge as a candidate. He will never get Auburn back to this point again.

Do the math on the taxes you have to pay in CA vs. TN, plus cost of living and then the headache of trying to get to work every day in LA traffic. Even a million more dollars would be swallowed up.

$3 million in Knoxville > $4 million in LA, this is true.

But not $8 million...

Houston?? Was this supposed to be in blue font? From a character standpoint, Houston = Barnes, however, as a head coach, not even close. I go back 50+ years with UT BB and the best coaches in order have been Pearl, Mears, Barnes

At first I thought it was sarcasm, but maybe he means Allan? Maybe the ambiguity is intentional. In which case, that's pretty funny.

Not everyone's life is controlled by the almighty dollar and the need for more more more. Barnes will retire at TN close to family and friends. though he may never win a Natty he'll have built the program back to respectability and leave it to the admin to choose someone to take it to the next level. The only fail in the scenario will be the latter part.

It was actually a pay cut that UCLA offered so I don't know how serious Cal took the deal. But it's good to see UK officially end the yearly rumors that Cal might leave. I think he's here 5 years more max. Maybe less.
I noted the pay cut in two other posts, but it’s for that very reason that I think Cal really fleeced UK with this lifelong contract. No way was he going to UCLA, which is maybe at best, the 7-8th most popular sports team in LA/southern California to take a pay cut and live in an area that is 10x more expensive.

UK brass should have known good and well that was all a ruse, and that he was infinitely more than well-compensated already for the actual production he has provided, especially in the last 4 years. In addition to his $9.2 million salary, he gets a $2.6 million retention bonus each July for the next 3 years. In other words, he will be paid $35.4 million over the next 3 seasons.

That is ludicrous for anyone, but especially a guy who, over the past 4 seasons has 0 titles, 0 Final Four appearances, and who hasn’t even been ranked #1 anytime beyond November. This was essentially a lifetime contract before they even called it such. No one else on the planet is ever going to pay Cal $12 mil/yr to coach for them. It is a lifetime contract by default.

Would you be happy or sad?

This thread is to see how many of the bashers will jump the shark.

For the record, I think it would be a huge, massive loss.

Sad. We don’t have the program built up enough so as to attract a top candidate to replace him

If Tennessee goes to the NCAA Tournament every year until Coach Barnes retires Tennessee will be able to hire a very good head coach to replace him.

Barnes should get the offer and make UT counter plus extend. Then he can enjoy his foundation while knowing a 5* player is coming in.

3 mil in Knoxville is like 6 million in Cali. Most expensive place to live in the country. My friend made 87k a year, moved back here to make $35k, lives better here. He said he was "paying for gas with change" broke in cali

Simply put I’d be really sad. Barnes was a rare find for a school with little male basketball history. I think we’d be underwhelmed with whoever we could get to replace him.

Sad. Tennessee hires are typically autrocious unless we fall ass-backwards into a good one

Ok fans would you be happy if Barnes left for UCLA and the Vols go after Bruce Pearl?

I see what you did there. I wonder how few others will get it. “Why would Coach Barnes leave our storied program for that place...what have they ever done...”
UCLA.,several national championships in their history..,Tennessee not even one final four.
