I would really like to see our DE's get around the end and produce some

sacks and hurries on Cincinnati's QB. Anyone think Wilcox will expose some stunts and bring some heat this week, or only do what is necessary to win? Thoughts?

Possibly but early we have to see how stable we shall be at the db position. Cuz without coverage, you lose

Early its about containment and working in your lanes, because their best play is when the QB scrambles to extend the play...so until we see that we can contain...plan on seeing a vanilla defense...until second half....playing the old field position will be tap early

Be patient. We will most likely not show many of our cards before the Florida game.

We will play similar to last week on DE, we had fairly good pressure from the edge, but against this type of spread offense they can't pin their ears back every play.

I don't see this happening this week mainly because Cincy runs a spread offense. Defending the spread means playing your responsibilities. Spread QB's read the DE's and determine the play based on what they do.

In the spread, the DE is the key read for the QB. Gotta be careful to not commit too early.

Who was it that blitzed?...seems like it was from the safety possition and we ended up getting an int.

Would love to see more of that.

How healthy is Ben Martin this year? We will find out tomorrow. If he is back to full speed, I expect us to beat expectations this season. Two solid performances by our DE's this weekend should result in a W on the board tomorrow.

If he's not, Wilcox will have to get some speed on the corner this weekend to contain their QB. IMO

By corner, I am referring to DE.

I definitely don't buy that. Collaros does a good job making plays on the move, but when he has time to throw, that is when big plays happen. While we lost our best WR in Binns last year, we have a ton of young guys with big upside and D.J. Woods returning who is deceptively quick and one of the Big East's best WRs.

My buddy is an ex-player and got to go to our closed camp this year and he said our RB and WR depth is scary good and stocked full of big plays waiting to happen. The one thing we probably miss is the jump ball that Binns used to always win in the red zone. No 6'5" guys with 42 inch verticals this year.

I loved seeing Maggit put a hand on the ground Saturday. He came off the edge with speed and did a nice job of sliding around his blocker. He hurried the QB several times for incometions. Only once did I notice his blocker directing him around the pocket.

He won't have time to throw the ball this weekend if he stays in the pocket. Expect our D to flush him out of the pocket. It's not getting to him that will be the problem, it's bringing him down once we get there.

If our DE's are up to the task of containing him, expect a long day for Cincy's offense. My biggest question mark for this game is the play of Ben Martin.

You sure that wasn't Jacques Smith? One is 55, the other 56?

Yeah, though I did have a hard time during the play sometimes. Their size is very different, but it took some time to identify them early on.

Anyway, Jacques had some nice pressure and one solid QB hit, if I recall. However, they used Maggit on 3rd down several times with his hand on the ground (at least I'm fairly certain they did).

P wagg had a couple of hurries I believe, I think on the INT play Austin Johnson blitzed.

Good to know. I think I thought it was Smith every time during the game. Watched it on the internet with something less than HD. Announcers were clueless, too.

I think Daryl Vereen has to have a big game as well, speed and experience is crucial to defend the spread. Love our young LB's but Vereen and Austin Johnson will be the difference on Saturday

I agree. Vereen showed some decent speed to the sideline which is going to be very useful tomorrow.

I think Vereen should and will get a lot more snaps than AJ against the Bearcats.

The spread makes it difficult to blitz--or load up against any specific offensive tendency: that's why it is so effective (and why, incidentally, an often predictable pro-style UT offense has fared poorly against spread teams in recent years). There are lots of options to counter blitzes, and if the offense gets the ball to someone in the space vacated by the blitzer, you're giving up 10-30 yards. Defending the spread puts a PREMIUM on good one-on-one tackling. The spread is predicated on taking advantage of one-on-one matchups between receivers/backs and LBs and DBs in space. You throw a shortish pass (often) to a receiver/back isolated against one man defender--and if the back/WR beats his defender, he is making good yardage. If Linebackers and DBs make that initial tackle, the offense is containable. That's the key

Ends can only get up the field when the DTs are collapsing the pocket from the middle, otherwise the QB will just step up and throw or scramble. So while this would be great, I'm not sure we're going to trust our inside guys to do that. Expect to see disciplined D-line play (i.e. staying in lanes) with any outside pressure coming from blitzes.

As usual WKV you are correct. How does anybody block Smith? This guy is a monster. He weighs about 260 and is one of the top 2 strongest on the team.I look for great things from this kid and cant wait for him to blow Brantley up...and the Cincy qb too.
