The Tennessee football program died on December 1st, 2001. You may be thinking...what are you talking about?
That was the night we beat Florida for the first time in the Swamp in 30 years. The winner of that game was in prime position to play in the BCS national championship game at the Rose Bowl in January. All we had to do was win the SEC championship game the following week and we were on our way.
I was a junior at UT at the time, and the team buses pulled up at the track late that night. A crowd of people gathered there to welcome the team back. I knew it was over as soon as I saw the team get off the bus.
Casey Clausen and many of the players got off the buses carrying roses as if they thought it was a given that they were on their way to the national championship. We all know what happened that next week.
That was the last time Tennessee was relevant. The program died that night and since then it has been a zombie that has been allowed to linger far too long. Time to put a bullet in it and be done.
