I didn't know that Zack Azzanni is in charge of the punt return team. Best job I've seen there in a long time! Congrats on a great job there. GBO!

now that the masses want him fired we will be back to fair catches and lots of fumbles.
Our special teams have been outstanding this year. I hope Trevor has another year left.

Takes some luster off all the hype surrounding elder

Apparently the different sp units are spilt amongst the coaches and not all ran by elder. That wasn't what I thought was the case

Elite return games for both kicking and punting

Coverage units have been very good

And at least Medley has come along nicely in recent games at kicker.

I don't know how much credit to give the coaches -- some, for sure. We've just had an influx of very talented young football players who are getting their first chance to see the field on ST and that's made all the difference, IMO. That's why I'm so excited to see what these young players can do next season when they begin to play more regularly on the offensive and defensive units.

I would rather ZA focus first on getting his WRs able to get off press coverage and get open downfield consistently.

4 or 5 games back the fellas on the radio said that Butch had been coaching the special teams himself. Yesterday they said Azzani coaches the returners.

Half the monkeys here believe CBJ coached special teams. The same ones calling for ZAs head for dropping passes and over/under throwing receivers. SMH

Our special teams under Dooley were a horror show for fans and to our opponents we often looked like the Keystone cops out there. It's coaching for sure, our special teams improved dramatically since CBJ arrived.

I was going to start a thread about our D and how often they blitz, but wonder if any of you who really follow our defense knows if Azzani blitzes seldomly, often or occasionally?

Good special teams usually indicate that depth is beginning to emerge. I hope that's the case with UT.

UT has had teams with future nfl players sitting as backups and the special teams weren't much to talk about. This isn't just about the players

I don't think Azzanni has ever called a blitz. Unless it was our WR's blitzing the opposing secondary.

I can only write it, I can't read it for you. Not sure how 3 different people seemed to miss it when I said the coaches deserve some of the credit. I'm simply pointing out that the ST unit is made up of a lot of players from the great recruiting classes we've had the last couple of years (credit to the coaches again). We have better players out there now, which means they take coaching better than the guys they replaced and they match-up better with the opponents' players and win more 1:1 running and blocking.

Maybe this is some kind of crazy concept and I'm all alone in my thinking.

I believe this is misleading

My understanding is he coaches the returners, not the entire punt return team.

So, I guess he helps them learn to catch and when to take a fair catch etc..

it's truly the Volunteer way

if the team does something well, it's because the players were so good
if the team doesn't do something well, it's because the coaching is terrible

the players are almost never at fault (unless you're Jumper) and the coaches are almost never credited

You're missing the point that we've actually fielded special teams units with far more talent and their results were not close to this season. Giving the coaches only "some" of the credit reads like a slight

On the post game show Saturday night, jones said cZa had done a great job leading that punt return group

Not my intention. I credit the coaches, but also the players. The coaches will always tell you the single most important thing they need to win is good players. Not so sure we've had "far more talent" than the group we had this season. More experienced, maybe.
