I don't really keep up with recruiting a whole lot, but given the downtime, I've been reading whatever free articles Scout or Rivals puts up. One thing that really impresses me is that every defensive recruit says what an honor or privilege it would be to play for Monte and/or CEO. I don't recall ever seeing a player during Fulmer's tenure mention the quality of the coaching staff as their reason for coming. Instead, you heard about "the family atmosphere", etc, etc. I think that this change in the recruits' attitudes toward UT is remarkable. It's changed from a childish "gimme" attitude to a much more respectful attitude of deference given the experience that the two of them have accumulated.

Now if we could just get them to start saying that about playing offense for Chaney and Kiffin (not that it won't happen, it's just not happening yet).

p.s. it dawned on me that Peyton's choosing UT was, from what I remember, 99% based on Cutcliffe's ability to coach up QBs. I'm sure there are other exceptions as well, but not to the same degree.

I like what your saying. I feel like this coaching staff is going to recruit much more worthwhile players than our last staff. I think we'll see out top end prospects beng MUCH more productive

volinathens, I agree with what you are saying and also would love to hear the recruits mention Chaney and crew when explaining why they came to UT. I think that this will take time and a couple of years of proven success on the field. I'm not certain, that your comment about Peyton coming to UT because Cutcliffe was such a good Q coach, is accurate. I thought Cutcliffe made his name because he coached Peyton, Tee, and then Eli. I'm not sure if Cutcliffe coached Shuler and Kelly at the QB position so I'm not calling your comments false but I would like to see someone comment on whether he did coach Shuler and Kelly, which would have indeed given him a reputation as a great QB coach. Once again, I'm not calling you a liar but just questioning the accuracy of the Manning comment.

I would think it's been said a couple times about Chavis

Simon, who remains respectful of the former staff, said he chose the Vols out of high school because of John Chavis' ability to get players prepared for the NFL and how he felt he would fit into Chavis' system.

Considering he was the top lb out of hs that year, I'm somewhat surprised that I don't remember much of anything about his recruitment. But if he said it, that's exactly the sort of comment that I didn't think was made very frequently. In all honesty, recruiting has turned into such a spectator sport with its own media coverage over the past 5 years, so there's a good chance that a lot of players were making those statements to their local newspapers, but it didn't get broadcast any farther than that b/c the recruiting services were far less prevalent. Just some thoughts...

first it was that you "don't ever recall" and now it's that it wasn't "made very frequently"? Maybe your memory is just a bit foggy.

And the legend of Cutcliffe was built off the Mannings, not the other way around

That's just low. If you want to make personal attacks, be my guest, but I'd appreciate it if you could stay on point and make comments about the validity of my original post (like you did concerning Kevin Simon). If you've got more Fulmer-era players that made similar comments, I'd really like to know who they are, but just leave it at that.

oh good grief Sally it wasn't a personal shot. It was more a response for all these posts saying the old staff didn't do _____ like the new one. Yes, I'm glad we have a new staff/coach and think they will do great things in the future. However, most of what people "remember" about the old guys is just not true. It took me all of 3min to read your post and find a quote to show that it's wrong and I'm sure there are more if you're really interested

He may have not made that comment at the time, I don't know - but pj's quote is how he explained his decision in a recent interview. So, I'm sure that there is truth to it, but it doesn't necessarily mean that was how he was explaining his decision that many years ago....

I think the new staff is exciting and everything, but I think it's time to bring the hysteria to a simmer. Something that I learned from GQ is that "You're never quite as good as you think and you're never quite as bad as you think." I believe this mantra can be applied to the state of Tennessee Big Orange Football (past, present, and future). That is to say; Fulmer was not the anti-Christ, we didn't recruit only selfish players with Fulmer, and there wasn't a huge lack of respect for the old staff.

All the recruiting hype is garbage until we win games. Saban came in and went 6-6 but pulled in the best recruiting class in the nation because he had proved himself as a collegiate coach. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, and maybe Georgia will all finish before us this year in the SEC from a recruiting standpoint. The big names we are trying to land, we will be in it with them, but will not land most of them.

There is no chance we finish 6th in the conf in recruiting. None

Does that eally matter if we land consistant top 10 classes? I know that talent wins but, how much different is the # 6 class compared to the #3 class in the nation? If you get the players you want, and the the ones that fit take the #6 and walk away happy.

Do you guys think we can beat Georgia this year? I think that would be huge in recruiting.

Im picking a win over Bama or UGA. I think we have a better shot at them, than UF or Ole Miss.

Yeah, Bama is very beatable. Not saying we will, but they'll probably finish third in the West.
