I want a homer

I want someone other than mush mouth Bob and the most negative color analyst that exists. I am having a hard time understanding who makes some of the hires in the Athletic Department when it comes to radio and tv. It's like they draw straws or flip a coin.

He is not terrible but he does a horrendous job doing play by play. My favorites are when he tries to describe running plays, "running back over the right side for little to no gain on 1st down...2nd down and about 5 to go". What kind of a description is that, here I am thinking it is 2nd and 9 or 2nd and 10. My other favorite description is the "deep out route". "Worley with the deep out right all the way up to the 34 yard line for a big gain on 1st down...2nd down and about 3 yards to go". So, let me get this straight a little to no gain rushing play actually gains 4-5 yards but a "big" gain on 1st down and a "deep" out route gains 6-7 yards? It is mind boggling listening to his descriptions. I remember when I used to turn the sound down and would listen to John Ward as I watched the TV. Now, I would rather stare at the dash board with the sound completely off and try to guess what is happening in the game rather than toy with the notion of driving my car off of the side of the mountain just listening to his voice.

The only problem with that is that I think the only person that can fire Kesling is Kesling! The way I understand it is that he owns the broadcast company.

The UTAD allowed this? Isn't this a classic case of conflict of interest?

Honestly, one of the reasons I loved John Ward is that he didn't fit this description at all. Georgia's announcer Larry Munson precisely fit this description and I couldn't stand listening to him, even when I was rooting for UGA (e.g. vs Florida).

John Ward >>>> Larry Munson

Agree 1000%. John provided the perfect balance imo. He was incredibly professional in how he portrayed the other team and the game in general. He never used the words "we" or "us" or "them". He was only a "homer" in the way he expressed his excitement when Tennessee scored or made a big play. Hell, half the time you couldn't tell who he was the pbp man for.

He was exponentially better than Munson or any of the other homer play by play men imo.......not even close.

Kessling is the director of broadcast operations for the Vol Network. He has a boss. It's ran by IMG, which runs quite a few college networks and lot of other sports events. IMG bought out Host Communications sometime in the mid '00s. And as far as I know the vol network also falls within the athletic department.

I want a radio play by play announcer that is 100 % homer for the Vols. I want him to say our and us and we when describing Tennessee on the radio. I want him to say them and their when talking of the other team.. I want him to sound disgusted and mad and unimpressed when describing another school and ecstatic if not orgasmic when the Vols have success. I want him to be hated by visitors and loved by all VFLs and I want him to be great at his craft. I also want him to meet todays culture and not the Cracker Barrel culture of the past.(Yes they do have great food, but) Is this person out there?

That would be annoying to listen to.

Thanks for clarifying.

If Big Jim and Thunder wanted Bob out, he'd be out.

John Ward never really did any of that.

Not correct. He definitely communicated excitement when we did something big. He never came across as pandering or kissing up to the other team. And he was nothing but the consummate professional at his craft. :shades:

Our only real homer is "money" Bert Bertlekamp the only VFL on the radio wish we could get Pat Ryan more involved in football games then we would have one in each sport

Bob is a VFL.........He was a walkon... but that still counts...don't it?
