Ohhhh.... so he left???

Ok, let me rephrase it. He was stabbed in the back by his buddy, the big pumpkin. The man had a heart attack and while he was recovering he was basically fired and his job was turned over to Fulmer. Thanks for letting me clarify.

John Major had NOTHING! do with where the program was in the late 90s.

Exactly if anybody on here had to suffer throught the 87and 88 season Majors would be loathed!!!

Ain't that the truth...

Majors should have been fired in 82 but the win over Bama that year saved his butt...I was more than ready for him & Walt Harris to be gone after the first 5 games in 88.

Major's gets too much credit for where the program was in 92....Fulmer, Chavis and Cutliffe had just as much to do with where the program was in 92 as John Majors perhaps even more.

Some will try to convince you that Fulmer stabbed Majors in the back after his heart attack but that's far from the truth Major knew he was walking a thin line with Dickey because of his drinking and constant *****ing about not being the highest paid SEC coach after 89/90 SEC titles. Major came back early after his heart attack in 92 because he felt Fulmer was getting too much credit and he was worried about his job. Major's resentment resulted in a conflict between he & Fulmer that permeated the team and resulted in losses to Ark/Bama/SC. Dickey had a choice fire Majors or let Majors fire Fulmer. Dickey made the right choice.

Don't get me wrong here...I like Major and Fulmer but both were fired when it was time.

:hi: Thank you. If there was one overall constant in the Majors era, it was a maddening inconsistency. Beat Notre Dame and lose to North Texas State or Rutgers. The most productive years in UT's history, from an offensive standpoint, were when Shuler was qb and Fulmer was offensive coordinator. Majors would not have enjoyed his lengthy tenure as head coach at UT, were it not for the fact that he had first been an All-American player and was hired fresh off the heels of a National Championship at Pitt. His overall winning percentage, however, was significantly below both his predecessor (yes, Battle left the talent cupboard bare) and his successor (yes, Fulmer clearly had the program in decline for the last 6 yrs. of his tenure). Guys, let's pay tribute to their respective accomplishments and leave the vitriol on the ashbin of history.

Pretty sure the players did not get this one, but Phil seemed to...."Keep your eye on the donut and not the hole".

Always liked this one after a tough loss..."If, IFs and BUTs were candy and nuts, Oh what a Christmas it would be"

"9 and 2 will do". I loathe no longer. Please bring them back!

where did you get that quote from.... I have been a UT fan following the Vols sense the days of Doug Dickey and I do not recall Johnny Majors ever saying that..... Bill Battle would not have even said that

Even though I always liked Majors and will take up for him, I will have to say solid post.

What turned me off Majors, was the way he fired most of his assistant coaches to save his own skin in 87-88.

I wasn't excited about the prospect of Fulmer being promoted to HC at the time. Everyone was tired of the conservative UT offense and was hoping there would be a coaching search instead of hiring within.

Playing bama during those years was unbearable for me. I felt we had the superior team (some of those years) but he just played way too conservative to beat bama. I mean prevent defense early in the 4th when only up by a few points is never going to beat a good bama team, ever. I'm not picking on Johnny, he is not the only coach we've had that struggled with being ultra conservative.

First of all, i don't recall Johnny Majors ever saying that. Second, even if he did, he was probably talking about the amount of yards needed on downs. lol

I was in school from 86-90 and we were pretty bad in 86 (7-5) and 88 (5-6). I don't recall being as good as we were in 87 (10-2-1) and 89 (11-1), but I do remember losing to Bama all 4 years and getting beat like a drum in 3 of them.

But, back to the original post....9-2 will do just fine about now, don't you think?

This sounds like my time at UT so far. Except I haven't been able to enjoy anything comparable to 11-1. I think the current generation at UT wants to hear nothing about suffering through a bad time. Majors was a hell of a lot better than Kiffin.

Think about how many national titles we would have if those losses to Bama and UF were wins back in the day.....Wow

This, sir, is exactly why I don't miss Fulmer and would rather take a chance on CDD. Every freakin year I knew how it would go. With Majors it was Bama, then Fulmer starts to beat Bama all the time and can't beat FL. I would sit down to either of those games, depending on if it was the 80's or 90's and say ok how or we going to lose. We'd always get real close, right down to the wire, and I'd actually start to have faith we might do it, and then bam kicked right it the fuglies. I actually feel we're going to beat Fl next year, by the way. Whoever has a list and is taking names, write mine down. WE will win next year!

He never said that. Johnny is the reason UT is where it is today. Excuse me, where it was in the late 90's!
