I think we've found the identity Butch has been seeking....

Our route concepts don't give us much of an advatage.....and/ or our wr's don't understand the scramble drill.

I look at it this way. It was a win, but the nature of the win, with all the fumble recoveries, leaves enough doubt so that the team has to realize they must keep improving.

So in a way it's a good thing we needed all the breaks.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good....and that looks to be the situation here. The breaks have gone against us for years....phantom catches in the end zone, balls bouncing the wrong way, bad calls, etc. However, at least through two games, the breaks are going our way. I know it takes a little of that for every team to achieve their goals, but we are cashing in at an alarming rate. At some point doesn't talent have to take over?

I'll take it, but I'm ready to see more.

The breaks weren't going our way the first part qu. of the Appy game.

You're right, but enough went our way to win the game late.

Please don't interpret what I said as being a positive. I'm puzzled, and a little dismayed at our situation. "Better to be lucky than good" is an idiom I don't really subscribe to. Id personally rather be good. But this is who we are and we're undefeated. The best I can do is be guardedly optimistic.

I'm honestly curious, Plz -- if it includes no keep/handoff option, why are you calling it a zone read? If there's no decision to make after the snap, there's no need to "read" the defense. That would just be wasted time and effort. Right?

Please explain.

Theres a website/blog where someone broke down the butch jones O. But there are several plays where it looks like its a read but in all reality its just a handoff. Honestly if you watch those plays you will notice that there isn't nearly the pause before the handoff and even the handoff is slightly different than the plays with a read option. The reason it looks like a read option is because thats the only way it will look with the way the qb and rb always line up in our O.

Why do team that line up in a I formation fake a handoff to the rb and then throw, or why do they fake the handoff and have the qb run to the outside, because like you said that just wastes time. But thos ethat know football well enough know is that them "wasting precise time" is actually an attempt to freeze certain defenders or the entire defense. The problem is that D players aren't complete morons and don't always fall for it.

Guys, my post started out a little tongue in cheek. I'm ecstatic about the win. After a large part of the last decade I never take a win for granted....especially one as high profile as this. But this win makes me uncomfortable. I came up with the Vols in the 80's with the hard nosed, blue collar Majors teams...and during Fulmer's decade of dominance. Thats not what I'm seeing with this team in so many facets. The bright spot is that, truly, our luck seems to have changed in spite of ourselves. Like I said, I'll take it and be thankful, but there is much to be concerned about, unless our luck holds out for 12 more games. This one was pivotal...we had to have this win. The score, thankfully, was lopsided...so many of the shortcomings will be masked by the drive by sports media, and we'll reap the benefits of playing on the national stage. Make no mistake though, we were lucky.

Agree 100%. (And also happy about the win!)

Thanks, Banicki.

And what you're describing isn't a zone read at all ... because there's no read.

That's why I was asking ButchPlz why he calls those non-read plays "zone reads".

Honestly still curious.

Go Vols!

I'll take our luck until we can figure out our game. I saw definite improvement between this week and last week but we have to figure out the run defense, need to keep a fire lit under the OL's collective ass, and start playing at kickoff, not the 2nd qtr or half.

I can see this being a team that gets better every week, by just enough to beat their opponent. I think 10 wins is still possible.

We do play up or down to our competition. Gosh I hate that. So far I haven't seen a run through. Gotta dominate from beginning to end to be champions. Everyday

maybe its time for Butch and company to coach like a championship crew.

We must come out with our hair on fire next week and don't stop until the clock strikes zero. It must be a total domination on both sides of the ball. Then I will feel only just slightly better about the Florida game.

I care about actually beating Florida a lot more than I care about my confidence level going into it.

It was luck that got Alabama past us last season. Lucky that it was a fumble and not just a sack. Could have been a different game. Luck wasn't on our side then

The only way I will feel good about the UF game is if at the end of our game with them we have more points than they do.

Why is it when we get turnovers and the other team makes mistakes we are lucky?

But when we have a stretch of bad luck this board mlet's down and is ready to forfeit the rest of the seasons games claiming we are horribly coached, underperforming, bunch of losers.

We whooped VaTech. We made the mistakes they made in week 1 but we overcame, they couldn't because we are better. This is the saddest winning message board in history. The way some of yall talk sound like Spurrier after they beat Vandy last year.

It may be that VT is a dangerous football team that just couldn't hold on to the football. I mean maybe they would actually be a top 20-25 team without the TO's so this was really a good win. Or maybe some good luck has finally returned to wearing orange. Hello stranger, been a while!

I'm happy with the win and always will be but there's still a lot of area's that will HAVE to improve to win ANY of the big 4 coming up IMO.

Oline (of course) and still a lot of missed tkl's. Seems our guys are there to make the plays near the LOS but we end up with 3 diff guys, usually 3 really good players at that, missing the guy and letn them get 9 yards. Missing DKjr for any amount of time in those 4 games is really gonna hurt IMO.

Other than that the Vols whooped some turkey arse! Freakin king Tut outran 2 guys half his wt!!! So glad he is back and I can't wait to see him put that Georgia *%@ on his back all game long!

Look, first off, some of those turnovers were completely forced by our defense and we could have done that to any team. They weren't drops. If you go back and watch, on one, TKjr comes in a 100 MPH after two others have initial contact and goes straight for the ball. And it pops out. On another one. Vickers runs up behind the back as the runner is trying for extra yards, and forcefully strips him of the ball. And let's not forget Tuttle, who in his first game back outran the QB and RB to get the high snap. That was all DL right there. That boy was moving and nothing was gonna stop him. So I keep hearing "we got lucky on turnovers" No, we created plays and took opportunities when they presented themselves. I watched several runs where Hurd refused to go down. And that scramble by Dobbs then passes it to Kamara for a touchdown. 1 day at a time fella's. We definitely looked better this week and we're 2-0. Time to go look at the film, prepare for Ohio and still be happy we don't have Dooley, or we'd be 0-2 instead.
