We have Georgia's LB coach from last year and bama's defensive coach from last year, and those two were good tackling teams. So i dont think they are not trying to teach these guys to tackle. They just have bad habits that needs to be broken.

We have no speed.. It matters

Many of UT's players seem to have the talent, but maybe not the smarts/drive to learn the skills needed to be great. Seems to be a growing trend at several places.

Butch may not have been able to teach the skills and maybe some of the players don't like being pushed to learn a new way of doing things that CJP and staff demand. (Shamburger).

I'm just grabbing at straws probably.

You can’t teach speed

It is more complicated than “teaching tackling”. Surely, people don’t think they are not taught. That is always taught and has been taught since you start playing the game. It never stops. Is it always people taking bad angles or is it turned into a bad angle because the other person is faster than anticipated?

There are instances where poor form causes a missed tackle, that is part of the game. It is similar to a missed shot in basketball. The idea is to make the shot, if you miss...”wish we taught our players how to shoot”...

Speed is the main thing I see as tackling issue. Overall team speed is lacking. Lack of speed has a negative impact on tackling, angles, recovery from blown assignments. When the other team is faster than you, there is no room for error or missteps. They will cost you. It has.

When will the helmet to helmet calls initiated by the ball carrier come into play? Hands to the face initiated by the ball carrier ( just look at that great stiff arm)? Oh that's right we need to favor the offense so the fans can see big scores and not become bored and wonder off to their I phones.

Texas 48- OK 45, that's just not football, maybe arena league.
Agree with all of your points until the last sentence. That was a great game

That is true. But I think CJP has been quoted about speed at some point. There is a thread on VN about it somewhere.

"speed can be overrated" Thread

In the case of UT some of it isn't lack of speed as much as it is a slight hesitancy due to the new scheme being implemented. Players being cautious not to get caught out of position. I see it coming together on defense for UT. They have to learn to play as a unit 1st then we'll start seeing more complex schemes which will be to our advantage. Ignot and both Taylors are ahead of the pack and others are starting to catch on. UT worked on basic fundamentals, tackling, and blocking more than anything else the 1st off week.

That is true. This staff has not had enough time to teach proper tecnique. My complaint is not only with UT but all of college football. It might also include pro ball. I am now watching the Titans- Buffalo game. Titans running back runs through the line and linebacker just stands there and makes a pass at the tackle and misses the running back completely.

Point taken. Some of it MAY have to do with so many rule changes that have been made when it comes to tackling. Players dont know whats a clean hit and whats not, and is flag footballing the game we are accustom to

I agree with that. It is understandable and a contributing factor. The mind slows up the feet. Same things happen when the game plan is too complex. Still lacking in overall team speed.

They’ve made the rules of football as such that what is being played is not really football anymore. Defenses don’t really know what to do because they fear being kicked out of games for targeting. Defensive backs can’t touch a receiver. Defensive ends, lineman and linebackers can’t touch a quarterback. They might as well get it over with and all start wearing flags around their belts. That what it really is out there.
