I suspect 1 of 2 things with this hire

Pray you are right.

I will say this, I do think there will be a few under the radar guys that Pruitt will look into. He was able to snatch a lot of great coaches/recruiters on defense.

As much as he seemed to be angry on the sidelines with Helton, find it hard that he would just go with a yes man. That was downfall of Butch and Pruitt's background isn't Offense.

Agree. Who are the under the radar guys you think he may be reaching out to?

No clue, but he has a few guys on the defensive staff who were completely under the radar.

Honestly, I would make Freeze or Kingsbury say no. After that, I would seriously make a run at Jim Bob Cooter all the way. He and Patricia seem to not be getting friendlier as the year goes along.

I fully expect a Friend hire.

But if we are going college OC route, I think Dan Werner makes sense. I would love to see Kurt Roper get a look. Gets a bad rap from the Florida Muschamp days, but he's a quality guy. With Mac getting fired at Colorado, Roper likely doesn't have a job.

This hire has to be creative or a homerun. Friend or current staff are not that.

Your first option is never going to happen. Pruitt is old school smash mouth football. Same way he is man press on defense. He wants to hand off 40 times a game.

I hope not, because 40 rushes a game won't win in today's SEC. Run-biased (some) is fine, but not run-exclusive. Even Nick S. saw that writing on the wall years ago, and adjusted accordingly.

Pruitt doesn’t want to have to run the Offense so whoever he gets is going to be in full control (based on the game plan and situations). So, I think you are right.

Pruitt wants to have full control of the Defense which leaves little time for him to have to worry about the offense.

And golden boy got him a Natty.

don't have to run the spread to use a QB that can run...it helps to keep a defense on it's heels, if a QB has to scramble, it helps...couple of designed runs can get that 3rd and two...it just helps all-around to have a QB with respectable wheels...:D

GO VOLS...RECRUIT LIKE HECK!

You don't even need a QB that can actually run. You just need a guy with the instincts to feel the run and the toughness to do it. I hope JG sharpens the instincts as he sure as shootin' has the toughness. Plus, he's actually pretty fast.

QBs who are opportunistic in taking yardage on foot when the defense gives it to them drive DCs nuts.

Friend couldn't get his Oline to block wind half the time so we're going to introduce him as the next OC?WTF?!?! On second thought when is the press conference making this official?

This will stay a pro-style offense . The spread is athlete dependent . The pro-style is team dependent. The pro-style , as it is run now , can be under center or it can go 4 wide or empty set and become the 'spread' when needed . Plus , the pro-style is great for recruiting .

In original post I should have included RPO because that is a definite benefit of the spread. We already do some RPO with current offense whenever in the gun, but going spread will increase the amount of RPO.

What QB on our current roster has these legs that you speak of?

I've seen JG run numerous QB draws this year and I think he is capable of running a FEW read option, and possibly QB power. QB needs to have a little toughness as previous poster suggested. Jmo of course.

I am not suggesting heavy read option like Butch ran. I am suggesting utilizing it more than we currently do. I am suggesting more rpo than we currently do. That is if cjp goes option 1 like I think he wants to.

1. Either CJP is gonna hire a man with experience in the spread ( getting the qbs legs more involved, and more RPO ) to help him install said offense ( with all the different formations/ways of dressing it up ). Goodbye to under center, I formation and two te sets, not completely, but for the most part.

Or...

2. He will hire ....... ........ well, ( hopefully ) a sharp passionate man to continue to help him with the offense he ( cjp ) has installed already. The more traditional type offense we have been seeing. I make this second point mainly to point out that I think the offense we have now is the offense CJP wanted, has the most knowledge of. I think he ( cjp ) was definitely involved in the install and scheme, overall and game by game, of the current offense we have.

I personally think cjp wants to go route 1, the benefits are too great to pass up. I give option 1 around a 70% chance of happening. I think option 1 hinges on CJP finding and being able to aquire a quality more proven spread off coordinator to help him with the install. If he can't find and aquire that quality, he won't chance it with an up and comer here. He will go with option 2, because cjp has a better grasp of the traditional scheme and won't need as much help scheme wise. I give option 2 around a 30% chance. Option 2 really is the fall back plan, as I think cjp wants to go spread, but wants and needs a quality more experienced spread mind to come in and help with the install.

I'm personally ok with option 2, for it will be a continuation of what we have been seeing, but with the added benefit of 1 year of experience under the players belts. Chances are, we will see a better more consistent product next year on offense.

But, I love option 1. Getting the qbs legs involved, plus more rpo, puts major stress on the defense. It has taken over college football and has even made its way up into the pros to an extent.

Based on everything we know about Pruitt, he is going to stick to the systems and schemes he believes in and has run previously. That means option #2. That doesn't mean there won't be some mixed formations and "smashmouth spread" variations.

Is it just me or did it seem like this was pretty much EVERY Pass play this year?!?!

Op could have saved time and just wrote, "Will Friend".

Seriously the rumors all season were that Friend was heavily involved in the OC duties, gameplanning, so forth. So if Pruitt was giving him/letting him handle things best left to an actual offensive coordinator(when we had a capable one on staff) then why would he not give him the position now that it's open?

It could be Will Friend, and that would fall under option 2 imo. Hopefully he is a sharp enough mind to help cjp build upon what has already been installed.

Well he isn't going to fire him.

I'd rather promote Friend to get him away from the Oline, than hire a scrub OC that was buddies with Pruitt back in the day AND keep friend coaching the line.

I hope you are right. It just concerns me that he is willing to run straight up the middle so often when we obviously don’t have the horses to make that work. I’ve never seen so many negative yardage plays in a season.

It's going to be Will Friend. It would be the most Vol thing ever.
The sad thing is , I think so also. If it is then Fulmer and Pruitt needs to be fired. This is something Fulmer would pull as a coach. This will be the beginning of the end of those 2
