I support bruce pearl

The tough thing for me is I actually like the guy. I sat right in front of him in Athens a few years ago at a football game and talked to him on and off for 3 hours and he could not have been friendlier. But I just can't get past the world of hurt he is bringing on the program and the PR hit he has dealt the school.

I know exactly what your saying...I honestly like the guy and I love how he has embraced the school and its traditions and how he brought the fans back....He even brought back some old traditions that hadn't been used in years with the striped pants, Walking through the crowd to the court, the orange blazer in honor of Ray Mears and just being a FAN himself...Who can't forget him painting his chest and jumping in with the student section for the Lady Vols?...That was awesome and sadly the next coach We get I seriously doubt will embrace the fans and the school in the same way....Yes he screwed up and most likely will be fired and probably deserves it but it doesn't change the fact that the entire vol nation will miss him a lot.

I generally agree with all your comments. I thought he was the perfect fit for UT. However, I cannot continue to support him regardless of the good he did for the program due to his propensity for dishonesty and now tearing down all that he built up. There is zero trust with him now and we can't afford to have the program destroyed because we like the success he's had and the good things he did for the program. It's very unfortunate, but tells you about his character. He had everything going for him, but threw it away due to obvious character flaws and continued making serious mistakes with his decisions on how to handle minor issues.

Wow...4 years...Wooo :eek:lol: No SEC tournament titles and a sweet 16 to show for it....Excuse me while I run outside and scream YES! at the top of my lungs :pepper:
Do you guys still think Pearl is the greatest basketball coach ever at UT after today's performance? Not picking on this particular post but I figured the title of the thread would be a good one to get my question answered from those that believe Bruce to be our best ever coach in basketball.

I'm in Pearl's corner.
See above response.

I think we should ride it out with Bruce Pearl. Take the punishments, whatever they may be and move forward. He's a good coach who had a rough year and made some HUGE mistakes, but i think we would be crazy to let him go. There is no guarantee that we would find a quality replacement (It took a lot of misses before we found Pearl). I think we should stop worrying about bad PR, and what all the media and people who don't give a s*** about Tennessee think. I dont think we should just give up on him after the first sign of trouble. Good coaches are hard to find, and we already have one, there is no reason to go searching for another. I think if we take care of Pearl now and show the guy some grace, he will take care of his side of things on the basketball court in the future. I'm certainly in Pearl's corner.

I'm sorry but this sounds like the philosophy of a battered wife not wanting to leave her husband.

Sorry if i struck a nerve.. and this sounds like you didn't agree with my overall message so you're reaching for something to put it down. Fair enough.

Not putting anything down and no nerve was struck. My opinion was exactly what I stated and it wasn't necessarily an indictment on your intellect or the post itself. What was your overall message? That no matter how bad Pearl has trashed the program everybody should stick by him cause he might do better and return to a former glory? If so, I rest my case.

LawVol13 you suck too. One negative comment after another, go find a hole and live in it.
Name calling is frowned upon up in here. But since you have such a great thread congratulating our coach that just got blown out by thirty against a lower tier Big Ten team, let me offer you a cookie....

The big outcry from many fans, is that Mike Hamilton made this statement two days before the Vols play in the first round of the NCAA Tourney. They believe that Hammy sabotaged the team by making the announcement when he did. My feelings are that this was a well thought out and planned statement from Hammy.

Mike Hamilton has a brand to protect, first and foremost. Bruce Pearl has harmed the program's image and the networks have not been shy about telling the world as loud and as often as they can. Hamilton was not ready to blow up the program in preseason, as the team was about to start practice and play. However, the season has progressed and in light of the NCAA's letter of charges, a new charge against Bruce Pearl, came to light. Hammy is making it clear that Pearl's conduct was not acceptable and a fireable offense. He is also making it clear that Bruce Pearl's refusal to sign the new contract is an openly rebellious offense against the UTAD, in light of the NCAA charges and potential punishment facing the coach and school. A move to break ties with Bruce Pearl is likely to help absolve the UTAD and bring a much lighter penalty against UT in the punishment phase of the NCAA's handling of this matter.

Secondly, the statement was made, as an announcement that the back channels of communication between the UTAD and potential coaches is open. The NCAA tournament is the best place to find your best coaches. Mike Hamilton is making sure that aspiring candidates have time to think about the UT basketball job and what it offers. Coaches will not be shy to have their attorneys and agents go through the back channels ask about the UT hoops job and have UT gauge their interest in their candidates.

In hindsight, Mike Hamilton is doing what is right for UT and protecting the long term interests of the UT basketball program.

Mike Hamilton is doing what's best.... How come Baseball, Football, and Mens Basketball have all gone under scrutiny since on his watch. Obviously he isn't doing his job........ Can him

Can't really argue this point. His hires include Pearl, Raleigh, Kiffin and Dooley. Well, I guess one out of four ain't bad.

I support Bruce Pearl. He will be back one day as a head coach at a major school. But he will have to start from the bottom and work his way up. It will take a few years but he'll be back to being a big time coach.

Hamilton on the other hand has to go. The Kiffin hire, letting Slive and the NCAA bully Tennessee and then his dumb comments before the tournament proves how worthless this guy is. If his thing is firing coaches on Sundays, then he has to go on Monday. Our Football and Basketball programs are a mess and he should take the ultimate blame.

I hope the right guy is hired after CBP and takes us to the next level. I just have a feeling that we are gonna go through 3 or 4 hires till we find the right guy. I hope I'm wrong but this is the way it's been since I've been following UT bball.

I totally agree that Bruce Pearl should stay at Tennessee.

All of us make mistakes, to err is human. It is the forgiving part that us humans seem to have so much trouble with though we are quite good at trying to set in judgment of each other.

Bruce Pearl has poured his heart and soul into our basketball program and has brought it back from irrelevance. Just look around TBA, with all due respect to Coach Summitt, every improvement you see is a result of what Bruce Pearl has done for this program. 6 straight NCAA appearances, national recognition, exciting basketball, elite 8 appearance and the list goes on and on.

Yes he made a bad mistake just like all of have at one point or the other. Forgiveness is now in order.

My overall message is that we should do whats best for the basketball team. In my opinion that is keeping Pearl. I agree that what he did was inexcusable, but I honestly think we could get past it. This was a bad year that was plagued with controversy and a lack of a three point shot, but our program is by no means trashed. I just think everything will eventually blow over if we just take our medicine and move forward.

I'm not saying that it would be impossible to find a worthy replacement either, it just seems unlikely considering our success rate. If we do fire Pearl, and hire someone new, he will have my full support, and I will understand why it happened. I just don't think that that's the only solution. I would love to see where Pearl could take this team on the court if he were to survive this whole mess and get a chance to redeem himself.
