I smell upset

I am detecting little flickers of doubt in gator fan eyes. They know they're supposed to win. They know they are defending nc's playing at home. They know that if they lose they will be the laughing stock of the nation.

Does this comment say more about the state of Florida or the state of Tennessee? I can't tell.

i am sure that kiffin feels like he understands the speed of floridas players from watching tape after tape but until he sees it in person against his own players during the game i can only image how hard hard will be to fully comprehend.

Florida brings in their 2nd team that is as fast as our 1st team... not entirely but they have way more speed in their depth than we do. We can't run with them the whole game with our 1st team.

All the players know UF has never gone undefeated and they would like to do it. It's OK to talk about it as long as everyone knows that you have to take it one game at a time.

That's the advantage of having players like Brandon Spikes, Ryan Stamper, Joe Haden, and Tim Tebow to keep the team grounded.

*sigh*

Hey I got an idea...why don't we worry about beating WKU and UCLA before we start thinking about Florida? Because we lose one of those I'm thinking just like last year, the "We can beat Florida" balloon will deflate very quickly.
Pssst, we are'nt the coaches or players....we're allowed :)

It will be a game where Tennessee's speed and their defense will keep them in the game ,but it will take 27+ to win...right now ID say

FU 28 Tennessee 17

With Florida's season opener against Charleston Southern a week away, it is time for my third annual game-by-game forecast. The first half will run this week and the second half will run next week. Take this light-hearted, tongue firmly in cheek, look the way it is intended -?as harmless fun.

Florida 45, Tennessee 6

Tebow throws for four touchdowns in the first half as the Vols defensive backs learn old man Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2 cover scheme is not as easy to master as they thought. Tennessee enters the game having allowed zero touchdown passes to Western Kentucky and UCLA in its first two games after having never allowed a scoring pass in any spring, summer or fall practice to quarterbacks Jonathan Crompton and Nick Stephens. The Gators throw away from Eric Berry and bury the Vols quickly. Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, seeking a return to the Vols' glory years in the 1990s, achieves that goal in one area - Dunlap has five sacks, tying a UF school record set by Alex Brown vs. the Vols in 1999. Tennessee goes ahead 3-0 after a long kickoff return to start the game but does not score again until a 54-yard field goal on the last play. Kiffin celebrates, then sprints across the field to direct the Tennessee band as it plays the alma mater, telling CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson that recruits watching on TV now "know the Vols can win a national championship." A UF sports information release points out Urban Meyer is 5-0 against Tennessee while Ron Zook went 1-2.

Go Vols

I think we'll come out and pop them in the mouth in the 1st quarter...suprise them a bit...get out to an early lead but all together Flordia's talent will outlast ours
UF 35 TN 21

I'll drink the kookaid and predict an upset. Why not? I think Old Man Monte will have something special for them. If we do lose I don't think it will be the blow out everyone thinks.

Friends, our season does NOT rise and fall with September 19th! Florida has a tough SEC schedule. We won the SEC East a number of times without beating Florida. I agree it would be very NICE! But lets just play one game at a time and let Florida take care of themselves.

UT's best hope probably lies in the fact that Monte has been studying ways to defend UF almost continuously now for almost 9 months.

I have no intention of bashing optimism. I admire it. I just temper it with a dose of reality. We will be MUCH improved this year. I have predicted 8-4 to all my UGA friends...and that includes a win over the Dawgs.

Again...not bashing...just looking at the situation from a realistic perspective.

Just judging from rosters and coaching staffs, I don't see any reason to pick UT over UGA (rather than sheer homerism), it could happen however. I don't think many outside of VolNation would agree with you though. I also don't see where the 8 wins are going to come from. Would you care to list them and give reasons for the victories?

UF is best team in the country right now where we like it or not, we will do good to be undefeated by the time we get to them, hope were not overlooking our first two games,or it could be bad for us....Gators are on top, were in rebuild mode..we will be back, and we will have our time again to smack the gators around some, it always works like that....these next two years the vols will get better and better, will be back at the top soon...this years gonna be a tuff year for vol fans, hang in there. :peace2:

UGA was the best team in the country this time last year....

Hear me out. Florida is riding high right now. They're openly suggesting they'll hang 60+ points on UT. Indirectly, they're equating UT as their WKU. Here's how they lose:

Confidence is great, over-confidence is not. Tennesse has confidence at the moment. Florida is over-confident. When you're over-confident, you attempt passes you wouldn't normally try. You protect the ball less than you normally would because you don't respect your opponent. You go for ball-strips instead of making sound tackles. You go for ill-advised INTs instead of making sound tackles. You try to exact a score, rather than win the game. Follow me?

The atmosphere is ripe for Florida to commit some of these very mistakes. Granted, the Vols have to play perfect ball and catch Florida in the mindset that I've just described. If Tennessee goes to the swamp and executes Kiffin's game plan, we may very well be "singing Rocky-Top all night long".

Tennessee 24 Florida 21

Well, kudos to you. This is what being a true fan is all about. To be able to stare reality in the face and scoff at it, all the while believing your team is capable, no matter the talent and statistical discrepancies, of pulling off a huge upset...well, sir, +100 to you. If our roles were reversed, I would have the same feeling about the Gators, right before we got trounced in Neyland. But I would dream to the bitter end.

Figured i would chime in as a Gator fan

While i have not kept up with Tennessee much i have tried to keep tabs.

First off i like Lane Kiffin as a coach. He has said and done some stuff that im sure other people hate. Saying something like "we're going to win in the Swamp next year and sing rocky top" im sure got Florida motivated.

Bottom line is Kiffin has ribbed Urban Meyer and the Gators, trying to excite his own players and Vol Nation.

Tennessee has a good defense, Eric Berry is one of the best Safety's in the country along with Taylor Mays. I have a lot of respect for Eric Berry.

Likewise Florida's offense has some question marks going into next season. Im not worried about the offensive line, Matt Patchan and Carl Johnson were both highly recruited coming out of high school, as was James Wilson. I believe all three were 5* recruits and all are competing for PT.

Our O-line will be fine. The only real question mark on Florida is WR. David Nelson and Riley Cooper have made plays before but they have not played a full season as THE guys, they played in Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy's shadow. However every year since Urban Meyer has been here we had to replace guys at WR and have had other guys step up and play great. I expect our coaches to have this unit ready and competing. Aaron Hernandez is not a blocking TE, he is more athletic and can make plays.

Since the game is early in the year, i expect Tennessee to try to run the football, make Crompton or Stephens(?) become game managers. Tennessee has sustained injuries at WR so i don't expect them to try and air it out. Not sure what the story is on Bryce Brown or if he will play either.

With that said Florida has a pretty stout defense of their own. Our Front 7 is improved this year, our DT's(our weak spot last year) have made improvement. Tennessee has not been able to run the ball much in the four years Urban has taken on Tennessee.

I expect defensively the Gators try to make Tennessee beat Florida through the air, and if that happens Tennessee will be trying to throw against the best secondary in the country. This same defense slowed down Sam Bradford, Manny Johnson, Juaquin Iglesias and forced Bradford to throw 2 INT's in his worst game of 08. With all due respect to Tennessee, Crompton or Stephens are not on the level of Sam Bradford.

Upsets can happen, if Tennessee can force fumbles or turnovers by Florida they have a chance. That is what Ole Miss did, Florida was up 17-7 at the half and two fumbles inside our 30 and Ole Miss was right in it. They ran the ball on the ground with McCluster and turned Snead into a game manager(he had 99 yards passing with 5 minutes left in the game). They blitzed and got pressure on Tebow and were able to force turnovers. Florida's losses under Urban Meyer have usually happened when Florida turned the ball over.

Turnovers by the Vol defense plus a big play through the air or on the ground and the Vols can spring the upset.

If neither of which happens, i expect Florida to win by a score of around 33-10. The Gators have a talented offense and can be capable of scoring 50+ on Tennessee. However our wr unit needs to step up and show they can make the plays. If Tennessee cannot stop Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey or Emmanual Moody than the Gators can score 50 on the Vols. However i think the Gators offense will be a little sluggish out the gate just like last year.

X Factor: Brandon James, you guys have not stopped him at all and he can shorten the field for the Florida offense.

As a Raider fan i did not want to see Kiffin leave, he may be the guy for Tennessee and he may not. Right now Tennessee doesn't have the experience on offense to spring an upset without some help from Florida(i.e. turnovers).

Meyer has circled this game on his calendar, Kiffin's trash talk is posted inside the locker room and the game is at home.

This has all the makings of Georgia 08.

Lets see how the Vols do vs UCLA before we can see if Tennessee can really pull the upset. But like i said anything can happen in the SEC.
