I remember eating at a Restaurant on Broadway around the area Central comes in called the "Lazy Susan" it was a home cooked meal but placed in center of table on movable center piece and you simply took what you wanted...

Any other Knoxville people remember this place, My wife says there was no such place

That name sounds familiar. But, can't remember for sure.

I remember driving to California and back on less than $150 in gas back in the day.

My wife who was my girlfriend then, lived in Ocala Florida, and I lived in Knoxville... I owned a 1970 model Maverick (bought from Hull-Dobbs Ford on Central).

I would drive from Knoxville to Ocala for $13.00 worth of gas... Could fill it up in Knoxville ($6.50) and stop again in Perry Ga. and fill up for another $6.50...tank would be empty when I got to Ocala but I would make it there.

Spent a lot of $13 back then LOL

Yeah, gas was really cheap. And, then, sometimes, you'd hit a gas war where it was like 10 cents a gallon. Now, travel is limited for some due to exorbitant gasoline prices that do nothing more than line the pockets of the big oil companies. Our next war should be on these unAmerican companies.

I never bought it for 10 cents a gal but I did purchase it from a place out off Rutledge Pike for 19 cents.

That gas had a smell like rotten eggs, made my car stink for weeks LOL

79 cents for me. I remember me and a couple friends scrapping money together at 17 to cruise the four lane. Had an old Nissan Sentra, 5 bucks gas would last forever.

I also remember taking that same car, busting the windows out and going mudding in it as we went to the river. Did donuts on the county schools football field in it, tore it all to hell. Had bought another one and just trashed the old one. Good times.

I remember when I turned 16 and got my driver's license. I couldn't wait to get out of the house of Friday and Saturday nights. But, dear old Mom made sure I was taking care of myself. I'd always try to leave the dinner table early to get a jump on the night. Sweet Mom would always say, Now honey, finish your supper. It'll give you energy. You can't go off drinkin' and chasin' whores on an empty stomach.

Sounds like the advice my dad use to give me.... told me I had better get all I could while I was young cause one day I would be old like him and unable to LOL

I remember when Knoxville was just another little podunk small time country ass town. I wanted it to be bright and shiny like NY or some place in Cali. It was just too rural and small town for me. Now, I wish that it had never changed from what it was.

Slydell and Coastypop brings back some memories. I remember some 19 cents a gallon for gas (1970 era) during 'gas wars'..25 cents for Super Shell.. moms 1961 '283' chevy loved super shell,,, I figured I got 5 more horsepower.... ha

There was no better engine in my mind than the 283... the 265 just did not have enough horses and the 327 stretched the block a little to much...

Besides I could actually work on the 283... I can't even find the engine in my car today, can't see it past all the computer chips and boards

Yep,, changing the plugs was as easy as changing the plug on a lawnmower... first car I bought and paid for was a 1965 Chevy Impala,, I remember the payments were $57.13 per month.. tough money bagging groceries...
