Bruce would use the upcoming break to look at some film of John Chaney's teams at Temple and Jim Boeheim's championship team at Syracuse. I honestly believe the best option for this team is to become a halfcourt zone defensive team. Sure, throw the press as a changeup, but don't expect this team to live off of turnovers. I just can't see this team becoming an effective man to man defensive team, either. Being a staunch member of the Church of Bob Knight, I feel a bit queasy calling for the use of zones. However, you have to play to your personnel occasionally.

Well I'm glad that he's willing to throw a zone out there when one is needed. Growing as a coach is just as important to success as players maturing is.

The press is not working this year. We get the occasional turnover but more often are out of position when the ball is over half court. With the length of this team, zone should be effective. It also seems half the time we score, our players are so busy celebrating that they are not setting up the inbound pressure that has been so effective in the past.

As Bruce put it tonight in his postgame, the press is less about turnovers this year...but it's still an effective tool in wearing the opponent down with our depth.

He pointed out that Belmont's top scorer missed several FTs down the stretch that he would have hit easily otherwise.

Of course, then again...so did we.

Rick Majerus used it very effectively to beat Arizona and almost upset Kentucky in the Final Four. The common thread between that Utah team and this UT team is length, especially when you have a lineup of Chism, Tyler, Prince, and either Hopson, Tatum or Woolridge.

Boeheim and Cheney have both done the matchup well for quite some time. Active zones can be tough to deal with because there isn't a good way to free men up against them.

Can you send those videos to Calipari also? Wait, he has video from last night.

Vols and Tigers are similar, long and athletic. Zone defense would be suffocating and would cut down on drives in paint.

Good point, with their length it could flustrate teams into having to hit those outside shots.

He needs to bring about some kind of change or we are about to get waxed looking at our schedule coming up.

While you do make a good point about wearing people down, Renfroe was a 68% FT shooter and had hit 11-12 prior to the last 7.8 seconds so in fairness, he was due to miss some.

This is the quickest, most athletic team Bruce has put on the floor during his tenure - it's rather mystifying to me as to why the press has been so ineffective this year.

I'm starting to think, in terms of general defensive chaos, that JaJuan Smith was much more the straw that stirred the drink than I initially thought.

I'm afraid we would get beat by the 3 if we started going to zone primarily. Gonzaga and Temple killed us from outside, and those were our two losses. I know those were two lethal teams from three but if we were to do it, we'd have to pick our spots, like say against a team like Memphis.

Well, it seems to me that at the beginning of the season, we were trying to press as we were last year, and teams were simply beating it or throwing over the top of it for a runout. (and I'm talking UT-Martin and MTSU here.) So now we're in more of a 3/4 court pressure or one man token backcourt pressure. I'm still not sure why, exactly, with the length and athleticism we have, that the full-court press can't be even MORE effective than it once was, unless it's a general basketball IQ issue.

I would agree with that.
Bruce now has some pieces to work with. He needs to be more multiple on defense. The top programs, that have the top athletes find a way to be multiple and unpredictable. Their aggressive approach is the system that he teaches, but I think he has to figure out how to change up things, but not stray away from their style.

This team is depressing. It's amazing that CBP has recruited guys that do not fit his style of play. For everyone questioning CLK, look no further than the BasketVols example of talented players not able to execute the coaches' bread and butter. CLK turning down 4 star recruits because they don't fit his style of play is exactly what CBP didn't do. So on paper we have a good team that is not a good fit for what we've come to expect from a CBP team.

Maybe, but the CLK part is yet to be proven.

If our motive is to wear down the opponent, why not simply guard the man bringing up the ball full-court throughout the game? Do we need a full court press to do that?

Pearls previous teams used the press to turn the other team over, and get the tempo of the game up. Those teams pressed a whole lot better than this team does, but was no where near as deep.

Certainly, we are more athletic, but definitely not as quick as we have been. To me, if we could learn to play an aggressive zone we could be pretty difficult for teams to handle. I would much rather get beat from the perimeter than see teams consistently take it to the hole on us, ala Belmont's point guard yesterday, who had a career day.

This team is a lot different, Pearl is still trying to figure out what he has, and what works. That is part of coaching with the elite. I think we will see more of an identity by the time the SEC roles around, and we will know what we have.
Good or Bad.

You are going to eat these words. Maybe not in the short term, but this will come back up in next year or maybe even later this year.

We will be ok, but I agree with the defense... I would love to see a 1-3-1 with this team, but I know I am dreaming with that one.... We just aren't fast enough on the perimeter to handle a quick guard.
