I really did. I like him. The simple truth is he was given a great opportunity here but failed. It was his own fault. The buck stops with the HC.
I wish the best for him and his family but it is hard to feel sorry for someone making millions of dollars off UT.
Wish it would have turned out different.

I did too, until the UMass game. When you can't blowout cupcakes, you can't compete in the SEC.

I wanted him to do well also.

I was critical. Many didn't like that. But the patterns and trends within his decisions and small scale results is what has brought us to this point. He's had injury issues since the second year. The offensive scheme has been a problem from the start. Attrition and/or poor recruit selection has been a problem. Development is a problem.

None of the things being talked about now are new. Many if not most were evident by the Vandy loss of year 1 and certainly no later than the UF loss of year 3.

I've never been a fan of Jones. He does a lot of "look over here...not over there" and has to go out of his way to discuss "successes". Not to mention he's just a cornball.

With that, he's the coach at UT so I hoped like hell he would work out. It was in everyone's best interest that he was the man.

I hoped he learned a lesson from last year where he put a lot of the leadership on the upper classmen. Not a bad move, but it backfired. With the team coming back and the staff he put together I had hoped it would lead to something good. It didn't.

This team, on offense, looks like the old Worley days. It sucks! There is no rhythm, nothing. 3 and out. If the other team gets 14 points, the game is over! That's sad.

As did I and every other orange blooded UT football fan.

But if something causes you more pain than happiness, just let it go.

Good grief. The man has robbed over $15M from a state school and is about to be FIRED AND STEAL ANOTHER $9M in the process. I feel so terrible for him.

Gimme a break.

He had potential. He’s an outstanding recruiter. He just can’t get out of his own way. Micromanages too much.

I like him, too. He's a fine person, no doubt.

Butch is just in over his head, at this point in his coaching career. That much is clear... and I am sad about it. I wanted him to be "the man."

As somebody said in another thread, "Butch is the man before the man."

Let's hope the "man" who can get it done on the field isn't a douche off the field.

Yeah me too. Now I just want Chip Kelly to come in and build on the progress made under Butch. Sooner rather than later since we now are declining.

Yep, we all wanted him to succeed. He’s done a good job of rebuilding the roster, promoting Tennessee traditions, and has won more games than where we were. He just hasn’t won enough.

To me, Butch sounded like a guy who was at his dream job and wanted to be here for life. Little did we know he failed upwards.

Most fans wanted him to be successful at UT. After his first full class there was a lot of optimism, but the coaching during games has been terrible. He left wins on the table too many times as he was simply out coached in game. That has been a reoccurring problem for him along with not playing enough players to build depth. It's sad because he's a good guy at I heart and runs a clean program, but after four full seasons and a half the Vols are no closer to winning the East than they were when they fired Dooley and hired Butch.

Lack of player development and a stubborn philosophy will be his undoing

Promoting a Tight Ends coach who has never been a coordinator or called plays to Offensive Coordinator. Promoting a Grad Asst to offensive line coach, and hiring a Wide receiver coach who has never been a position coach at the D1 level played a pretty big role as well.

Fulmer never called plays, neither did Cutcliffe. They turned out find. The promoting in and of itself was not the problem as you're making it out to be.

We all wanted him to do well. But it's becoming obvious he can't compete at a high level or develop highly recruited players.
