I rank this loss as bad as

It is not worse than a Vandy loss, but the timing and circumstances around it make it dreadful in its own right.

UCLA JV team.
All the other SEC East teams picking up convincing non-conference wins in week 1.
Everything appeared to fall into place in the offseason.

And this is what we get.

No, it's not as bad as either of those two. Worse than last year's cal loss though.

Didn't we lose to Chattanooga back in ancient history?

Yeah we did. It was back in 1958 though i think...so I don't think most of us are old enough remember the team / have been watching football then.

This loss was as bad as the 2004 Peach Bowl loss to Clemson. Beaten by an unranked out-of-conference team we should have whipped.

It was said before, but I'll second it... the reason this loss was so bad is because of the circumstances... We're on year 10 since our last title. On paper this is a game we should have easily won. The expectations were running high, and after finishing last season on a good note we waited 242 days, for the most part fairly optimistic, chomping at the bit... and we were rewarded with that monkey ----.

Yes, losing to Vandy was bad, but I'll argue this one hurts more. We already knew we sucked bad when we lost to Vandy... but this one flat out cold cocked us.

Vandy
Memphis.....you?

No, Vandy and Memphis is much worse.

I like what Cowherd said on his show yesterday. (I know some people don't like him) He said as good as the SEC is, it is tough to travel to the west coast and beat a Pac-10 team. He said the SEC is definitely better, but it is just tough, with the travel distance and play style and everything.
He said, it is the same when the Pac-10 travels and plays an SEC team, they have a hard time winning.

It ranks up there with my High School years. Frustrating times during which I also had many incomplete passes, suffered from a lack of direction and couldn't score to save my life.

This loss was right behind Vandy and Memphis.

both teams might turn out to be good, or bad, I dunno. But that UCLA team that we played Monday night had an OK defense and a bad offense. Most any of the teams we have had the past 15 years or so (maybe more) would beat this team by two tds, save for maybe last year and 2005.

I rank it with Clemson in the Peach Bowl. Playing against an average team from an average conference, we had more talent but still lost.

My father used to have a theory about that. something along the lines of a team can't win a big game if it has to cross 3 or more time zones to play it....surprisingly it holds up fairly often

I think this loss is one of the worst in the Fulmer era. Why?
1. The national spotlight.
2. The anticipation of this season as it relates to the past 5 years.
3. UCLA is not a good team.
4. What this game represented. Our trek to the top again.
5. Setting the tone for a great fight for the SEC East.
6. SEC vs PAC 10. Only us and Miss State lost their openers.

But I am getting used to being dissapointed. Our team has lost a lot of face for this one.

Spot on.

It was an absolutely terrible, unforgivable loss... that we can just add to the growing list.

Duke, sheesh, I had ALMOST forgotten about that one. Thanks a lot.

Duke which was coached buy Spurrier at the time and one year away from the ACC title We started 0-6 in 88 when they beat us. Hardly an upset. The game was not even close. Still his greatest coaching job to date by Spurrier.

Worst loss is Army at home in 86 on a blocked punt in our endzone with under a minute remaining.

It hurts bad not as bad as the memphis and vandy games though. It hurts because I was looking at a 10 win season the entire world is watching and we just looked bad. I am not sure where I would rank this, but the fact we started off the season so terrible just makes me sick... Maybe we should schedule Youngstown St or Georgia Southern 2 play 1st so we can all feel good about ourself for atleast a week

Welcome aboard MVB. I've always felt that Van Buren shouldered too much of the blame for the poor economy of the late 1830's.

Give me a break! This loss is bad, but NOT EVEN CLOSE to the Memphis game. Don't forget the Rutgerts game in 79??? I think that was the year. THAT WAS REAL BAD!

UCLA is not great, but they are still UCLA. They have alot of really good players. Even their 2/3 teamers are still highly recruited players. UCLA is not Memphis or Rutgers of the past!

I agree those dang whigs calling me Martin Van Ruin, should take a long look at their own party. But the loss to UCLA was much worse than the false allegations of me draining the economy.

I'd rank it about even with the 2005 loss to Alabama, we were tied 3-3 very late, and fumbled the winning TD through the back of the end zone and then let Bama drive down the field to kick the winning FG.

I hate losing to Bama anytime, we should have had them beaten, I didn't think Bama was all that good that year, despite their record. We lost a game we should have won and instead in turned us into a tail spin where we lost three more winnable games (SC,ND and Vandy) and had our most disappointing season in many years.

I hope this season turns out better.

UCLA is not as good as the Vandy team we lost to at Neyland a couple years ago.

Losing this one to UCLA is more shameful than losing to Vandy. No question about it.

Vandy in 05 would have beat this UCLA team, hell almost any team would have beat them. This is the worst loss that I can remember, and the worst prepared I have ever seen. It looked like a middle school game Monday night, I was embarressed to be a UT fan especially how Ive bragged on us to everyone. But again Fulmer made me look like a fool.
