That year the Bruins had to play a heavily-favored USC with a Bruin backup QB (Norm Dow) because their starter (Gary Beban) had his ankle sprained or broken (can't remember which) the week before against Washington.
Coach Tommy Prothro (a Tennessee native) and QB Dow pulled the gigantic upset with clutch defense and a few trick plays. But in those days not all PAC-8 schools played each other. I think USC was 5-1 in the conference and UCLA was 4-1. In any event, the PAC-8 voted that USC should go to the Rose Bowl because of more wins.
That was the last year the PAC-8 voted on the Rose Bowl representative. After that debacle they came up with a formula that has been used ever since. Had that formula been used in 1966 the Bruins would have gone to the Rose Bowl instead of the Trojans.
When the decision was announced to send USC to the Rose Bowl the UCLA students shut down the San Diego Freeway, a feat not matched until a certain Trojan in a white Bronco did it decades later.
So, welcome aboard. I can deputize you all as honorary Bruins, now that we are off your schedule.
