I know people are disappointed but dang. With all this program has gone through we can’t expect to be world beaters out of the gate. Sure Milton left somethings to be desired but we also did some things a little better. Anyone that had ANY kind of expectations coming into this season would would be operating on hope. With the player and coaching turnover we really didn’t know what we had. If you are disappointed it is because of over inflated expectations. Just stay behind the Vols and I have always said Heupel gets a pass this year. I mean he walked into a dumpster fire but… he wants to be here and is working his butt off and I happen to believe he knows what he’s doing unlike the previous coaches.

I hear this "what did you all expect," stuff, but I seriously do not know anybody who thought UT would be any good this year. Heck, none of my friends even talk about them. I'm not sure where this is coming from.

I suppose it's possible that Heupel is a diamond in the rough, but given Tennessee's run of luck these last two decades, I wouldn't bet on it.

Yes there were the drops, but that has nothing to do with leaving 2 long TDs on the field because of lack of touch.

That was very low talented BGSU team.

we just had 4 years of absolutely terrible offense.. like awful
I’m very pleased and that all that matters

Expect to see the team play up to its potential week in/week out. Some guys did. Some position groups did. Overall, I'm satisfied with the D albeit against weak competition. I think the OL played well most of the day. The RB's ran hard. I don't think either looks like a game breaker but they made plays.

Milton and the passing game however left a LOT to be desired. He started out good then when they adjusted he seemed to lose it. He missed open receivers and failed to take advantage of holes in the D. The receivers for their part didn't find gaps in the D as well as they should have and had some drops/wrong routes.

So yeah, I expect them to be able to execute the basic passing package well. They didn't.

Yes, BG was and may still be the worst program in football. But, is the complaining justified?

I will say the second quarter was pretty atrocious. Thankfully they came out and handled the buisness in 2nd half. That's something we haven't seen in a while.

New coach, new qb, new system. I don't know maybe these are just excuses. Some of Milton's throws were not well placed and he appeared to not see many wide open options.

The problem, as we've seen for years at UT, is that if you don't have good QB play, everyone else playing well, still doesn't impact the game as much as the sub-par QB play.

This is the one area that Heupel is supposed to be a lock on, evaluating and developing QBs, and what we saw last night throws that into serious question.

I just read an article on ESPN about the odds of every serious football team to make a twelve team playoff down to the ones with a 1% chance. UAB, Ball State, and Tulsa made the 1% list. The once mighty Vols didn't.

Nah. Not after one game. Not even after 3 or 4. But if we get to Mizzou and that second 1/3 of the season without improve or a change... then we can consider it questionable.

IMHO, the other two would have performed better last night. The problem is that I do not think they have the talent to help you compete vs better teams.

I think most fans are frustrated because we have a highly rated QB on our roster and have endured rough QB plays for sometime now, yet continue to struggle at the position.

Everyone us mad about one position. Not coaching, not receiving, not running backs, not defense. It's all about QB. One position where Milton didn't meet our fan bases low expectations.

140 yards against a winless Bowling Green team is unacceptable. It's one position that will hold this team back from fulfilling its potential, however low that may be. No one is expecting college playoffs. We realistically want to compete and get some wins against Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Pitt, etc. But starting Milton could lead to losing all of them

It was nice to see the defense play the way they did. Evans and Small are a nice 1a 1b kinda tandem. The receivers have to catch the ball, and Big Joe needs to not just stand there, do like Dobbs, if its not there, its probably not going to be there, go, get, grab what you can. Its gonna be that type of situation, and if you have someone running free, you gotta know where everyone is. Milton III has a ways to go, but if he has the right attitude, and plays to his strengths, this can still work. I said it before, this is an 8-4 team, but we gotta get by Pitt for that happen. We won the Battle at Bristol, and had better win the Johnny Majors Classic!!!

Compared to what Heupel walked into, those guys took over a juggernaut. We as a program have never been at a worse or lower point in all aspects in over 100 years than we were the day Huepel took the job. At the same time we had arguably the worst coach in program history who will elevate to an easy #1 according to what sanctions we ultimately face. We had the worst AD in program history that also had to be cleaned out. We faced the biggest departure of players in the nation, by far, due to the new transfer rules. It was the perfect storm of disaster for the program in every way possible.

Every aspect of the program from compliance, administration, image, system and roster all have to be completely overhauled from the megadisaster that was the Fulmer/Pruitt combination. This is probably the toughest coaching job in America right now from an expectations vs reality standpoint. I'm normally a win fast, 3 years is enough time person. Unless we get lucky with sanctions, we are 5 to 7 years from any hope of returning to the Tennessee of 1927-2001.
