Nick Saban hates it lolYa I think it’s awesome for the game. It’s preventing the top few teams from essentially having a monopoly on all the top talent. Bama may still win on signing day but they can no longer all but force top level players to sit for 3+ year sometimes before they get on the field. These days a top player is going to spend a single year with the initial team they sign with. If they can’t see a lot of playing time on the horizon after that first year, they’re going to go somewhere that allows them to play. I think in general that’s great for the sport. There are former elite recruits that ended up at Bama, or Clemson, or UGA, etc. that essentially were forced to stick it out only to deal with injuries once they finally got their opportunity and never end up in the league. Some of those kids could have been starring at places like Tennessee, Ole Miss, etc. And that’s what you see the teams just a step away from the upper echelon closing the gap. Who’d have thought Washington and Michigan would be playing for the natty. These new changes are improving the game for all the teams not name bama, uga, and Ohio state. And guess what coaches have the the most outspoken against the new rules? Go figure
the top teams are also using to fill what few holes they have or just upgrade in general.Ya I think it’s awesome for the game. The pulling guard should’ve blocked #9 for UM coming in unabated from the left. All the other defenders were either committed or blocked to the inside. RB could’ve bounced outside to his left if #9 had been blocked and had a better chance of scoring. I’ll never understand some of these calls that don’t get a player in space and just run it right into the heart of a stout DL when it’s do or die time.I remember watching that and thinking something went wrong with the blocking. The right guard pulled but didn’t block anyone and the TE on the left stepped to the outside and had to reach back and appeared to be holding (ineffectively). Poorly executed all around.
Totally disagree. The coaches most outspoken about the portal are the ones already on top. Take Georgia for example… You mentioned them picking up several players in the portal. Well, Georgia had 5 former 5* recruits and 11 former 4* recruits all hit the portal within a 24 hour window when it opened recently. Just about every one of those guys was a 1st or 2nd year player. That’s why I said what I did.the top teams are also using to fill what few holes they have or just upgrade in general.
Georgia has pulled in 4 or 5 really good transfer players this class. Bama's number 1 WR the last 2 years was a WR.
when you look at the transfer class rankings they won't be very high, but if you look at the names they get they are getting great quality players in.
I wouldn't look to the portal upsetting the balance. the best schools are going to use it too. if some kid is stuck on the bench and leaves, those schools can go out and replace them, or even upgrade.
This is spot on, it will be the reason those top teams are not as consistent because it will have a larger affect on them when they have injuries.Totally disagree. Do you think picking up a couple of kids from other schools that don’t even know their system is an even trade-off? It’s not. It’s bad for the teams that stockpile massive amounts of talent and win more so by jimmy’s and Joe’s than the schemes they run. That’s why Kirby, Saban, and dabo have been the 3 most outspoken critics. We literally beat bama last year largely because of the recent changes to the sport.
It’s good for college football in general because it creates more parity. Bama has had many seasons that their entire no2 units would be starting at most places. They won’t ever be able to hold only that type of depth anymore.
