I know Montori Hughes is young, ...

Wonder how many more plays a game he has than Nevis? UT's defense is on the field a hell of alot more than LSU's and not near as deep. You oughta be thankful Hughes is here and playing.

But he is not yet a Noonan, Henderson, D. Walker or Haynesworth....Just sayin..

My only complaint or knock on him is that he doesn't have a high motor. He takes too many plays off. He has become Albert without putting in the effort first.

Nobody will challenge him this year, all you can hope for is either something clicking inside his head or a couple of the younger guys taking a huge step up and starting to challenge him. Perhaps the coaches will get it right and use another player taking reps and playing time away from him as motivation.

The problem is not Montori. If Walls were lined up next to him, they'd both be a lot better. If you are the only guy inside that a team has to worry about, then they are going to focus on you and you aren't going to be making a lot of plays. The other DT position is being filled with a bunch of makeshift DE's.

If he had another big body alongside of him that could keep him from getting double teamed he would play better.

this...and idk what the original poster is talking about, he's one of the few whose work ethic i don't question

my question is how many snaps does he take per game? probably alot more than he should. with no other real DT's we have to use him as a marathon runner and not a sprinter.

That's funny because the coaches do.

im solely basing it on what ive seen in games...he is constantly playing til the end of the snap and tries to keep the d fired up...maybe he slacks in practice idk, but in games it seems like he gives it his all

we started a former walk-on alongside him at DL against a SEC offensive line saturday, not much more to say about that

It would help him to have the rest of the d-line performing well too

This, they double team him often (with chop blocks). I don't expect a sophomore to dominate against double teams. I'm just glad to have him.

When your the only good defensive tackle of course your not going to be good, they'll double team you all day. Like some have mentioned if Walls was playing beside him he'll be a lot better. I also link his play to the fact we don't have a successful rotation and that he has been a walking injured for part of the season.

but there is absolutely no reason why he shouldnt be dominating Football games like LSU's Drake Nevis does.

He's as talented as Nevis, Bigger and as strong.

Im tired of hearing about "work ethic" concerns.

this team needs Hughes to fulfill his potential and play up to his talent level

/end rant.

Hughes is no Nevis. Really like Montori but he is not Nevis... doesn't matter how tired you are of hearing it but it is jsut one reason he won't match up to Nevis.

BTW, Reggie White spent his first three years at UT with "work ethic" concerns.

the staff has called him out for lack of focus and effort Numerous times, publicly, starting back in fall
Camp.

nevis is also a senior

hence, the reason I put in the title, "I know Hughes is Young" ...

Fulmer found him. They saw him at camp with no real fanfare, took one look at him and offered on the spot. Kept it quiet and he never really caught on with rivals/scout and other teams. That was a steal in the truest sense of the word.

Fulmer didn't find Jack! Fulmer's staff, specifically Brooks were told about him during Hughes' SR. year at Seigal. Coaches at Smyrna, Oakland, Riverdale, etc. were absolutely having to game-plan around him. It wasn't quite as dominating or as impressive as John Henderson at Pearl Cohn, but it was pretty damn impressive, and the competition was better than what Big John was playing.

Anyhow, UT does not show interest. Others do, and then soon find out ol' Montori just ain't feeling the school work. Still, others chase him, figure they will sign and place.

With the season over, Montori heads to the 1st annual Toyota East-West All-Star game, and was asssigned to the East squad. The QB of the East was Randall Cobb. Now, Cobb was a Kentucky commit, that UT had just recently showed interest in, but had not yet offered. So, good ol' Randy Sanders shoots down I-75 to protect his guy, now that he is representing KY, and has heard from Cobb that Tim Luke has been calling and was going to be showing up at practice.

Cobb has a pretty good cast of players around him. He's got (UT) Douglas @ TE, (UT) Wilkes @ WR, (FSU) Spurlock (OL), (Bama) Hightower, (MTSU) McLeroy & Stuart (OL) to name a few.

Montori is by far, and it ain't even close, the best player at any position there. Luke is so busy trying to get back in the fold w/Cobb, he hardly takes notice of Hughes.

Sanders does, and jumps on him like stink on doo doo. Later in the week, a high school coach from the mid-state checking one of his players, that was playing in the game, and has had a relationship through the years with the staff @ UT, asks Luke if they have an interest in Hughes...."who, oh the big kid, I heard he could not spell cat if you spotted him the c and the t."

Luke took notice shortly after Montori threw Spurlock about 4 yards sideways on his way to the bag during one-on-one pass rush. And then did it to the rest who he faced during the drill. It still took UT a month to offer, and then off to Hargrave he went.
