I just don’t get it... why would Baylor look so much better than us

Bowl games don't mean shite anymore. The current generation of players (and fans) couldn't care less in many respects if they aren't playing for something more notable than a trophy for winning the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, or the Dollar General Bowl, or the Cheez-It Bowl, First Responder Bowl, Quick Lane Bowl, wesuck.com Bowl, Camping World, Belk, Redbox...

Watching these bowl games is a reminder that your team is playing for squat. Hell, bragging rights across conferences aren't even a big deal. Players skipping bowl games to protect their future potential will kill these non-event games at some point. I am rambling...

I totally agree with you. I check in on the telecasts of these totally meaningless bowl games, in places that look rainy or otherwise dreary, in mostly empty stadiums, and I think -- are their fans really enjoying themselves?

Back when we had that really long stretch of going bowling, it was great to say that we had that long stretch and because it actually meant something because there were, at most, 15 bowls and it was the top 20 teams plus a few on the bubble. Now, you can actually get to a bowl game with a losing record. And the bowl you go to this year is very likely to have an entirely different name next year. It's like, who cares.

So again uh;

Baylor’s five year average is 33.8
Tennessee’s five year average is 13.2

Five-year college football recruiting averages should forecast next season
Dude.... go do some research and look at the players that made up those rankings and then make a list of those that made considerable contributions to the program...... a list of those that left early for the NFL..... a list of those that transferred and etc.

Those rankings don't mean squat...... did you watch the last two seasons? Did you see much talent in Orange? Come on man

Just a bad match up. Way more athletic on offense in a system that puts more stress on defenses.

Baylor would have best us like Mizzou did.

Pretty simple really. This was Rhule's second year at Baylor. "Rhule finished the 2017 season at Baylor with a disappointing 1–11 record, which meant Baylor would not qualify for a bowl for the first time since 2009."

If you believe some of the posts a few of our players made. They didn't want to win the Vandy game because they didn't want to go to a nothing bowl and miss time with their families.
At least that is what their posts said and from watching them play the last to games I believe they just didn't put out the effort to win.
Actually, that is a bad reflection on the coaching staff who are suppose to get players ready to play.

When Butch was fired he believed there was enough talent on the team to be very good. He actually said if Pruitt only won 4-5 games he should be fired.
That’s what I figured, don’t understand why dumb asses like him even still post.

This is true. I believe teams should be 8-9 win squads or conference champs to qualify for a bowl game.

Who cares about the Acme Widgets dot com bowl??

Meh, hes good people, just has a different opinion.
Don’t mind different opinions at all, just don’t put much stock in someone’s opinion about football coaches who defended butchy to the bone and then turn around and blame him for everything after he’s gone.

There is a thread titled something about vn running in cycles repeating itself. If pruitt flops, and there are a couplw of indications he will, it will be the exact same thing 3-4 years from now.

Oh I know... I certainly hope Pruitt pulls us out of the abyss... I’m like you though early on I’m not overly optimistic... and if or when we get a new coach the same ones praising him now will be blaming him for the new guys problems, some people never learn.

Fun thread to read. For Pruitt, 2018 was Year 0. Vols had rookie head coach but entire staff of long time SEC coaching veterans who can recruit and evaluate talent. Following the Mizzou and Vandy games, no doubt 2019 and 2020 recruiting are the priorities. If Vols had a cupcake opening game rather than West Virginia, they would be in a bowl, but who seriously wanted to see that squad again? Losing Smith, Chance Hall, Jack Jones and Kennedy wiped out a decent OL leaving MAC level talent. The Baylor vs. Vandy game was decent to watch but of no real relevance. If Pruitt can win 7 or 8 in Year 1 all will be on track for the Vols. Forget recruiting rankings - vol staff will sign real ball players similar to Rick Barnes. Baylor and Vandy will wander in obscurity and not be benchmarks for the Pruitt-led Vols.

Didnt we make fun of the last coach that used year zero?

What do we do better than other SEC teams? Recruit? Motivate? Develop? Out coach and scheme?

Don’t expect much change until we start checking off those boxes. Big stadiums, rabid fans, massive budgets, and tradition don’t win games. Pruitt has a tough row to hoe.

You might be the norm still or a dying breed. I used to really look forward to bowl games. Now, I have to force myself to care. I used to prioritize my schedule around the bowl schedule. Now, I don't even pay attention to when the games are played. Maybe i happen to catch them. Maybe not.

I have them on in the background, never really sit and watch a whole one. But I dont see what they hurt in having them. Fans enjoy seeing their team play, the players enjoy the experience, sponsors make money....good all around.

No hurt, per se. I just am not as invested as I used to be.

Remember it is a bowl game and teams have time to clean up their game, so they look good. Barring a bunch if penalties, drops, etc. bad, well matched teams look good.

Match one with a good team and it gets ugly.

It is amazing to see the mid major teams throw the ball all over the field. Accurate QBs, receivers with hands of glue etc.
Put them aginst a great team with pass rushers, and fast DBs and they fall apart. Good competition finds the weak points.
