My advice is to diversify your sports portfolio by cultivating genuine interest in a variety of sports. I'm a fan of the Vols, Predators, Titans, Grizzlies, and Braves; and I can't remember the last year in which at least one of those teams didn't provide something to look forward to. I've even managed to appreciate soccer lately rooting for Manchester City, the USWNT, the German national team, and Bayern Munich.

By avoiding overloading a single basket with too many eggs, you can learn to appreciate success while laughing off failure. In other words, you can train your brain to treat your teams' successes as your success while attributing failure strictly to the parties involved.

At the end of the day, I love sports, but I wouldn't characterize my relationship to it as "worship," nor would I encourage anyone to feel that way about any pursuit. Of course others will feel differently, but diversity of thought is to be encouraged in my book.

As for other endeavors, sometimes simple really is best. Read a good book, eat some good food, have some good sex, drink some good wine, listen to some good music, and just be happy you had the opportunity to live.

If you convert to Scientology the Vols will be damned for eternity. Please don't. I used to work ata drug rehab as a ccounselor that was funded by Scientology. I only encountered them twice a year when they came to check on the facility, but to this day (5 years later) they still find a way to contact me no matter how many times I've changed my number or address. I've cussed them out on the phone and they just keep coming. They're like the undead, although zombies might actually be more reasonable.

Just got a shiver down my spine thinking about it... I'll never own another pair of Khaki pants or shorts again in my life

In church today we discussed identifying idols of worship in our life, and how an idol is something that we often place our own value in. And for years I have placed my value in UT Football. When the team lost, I felt like I lost. My entire week was going to be crappy until we played again (and won). The teamÂ’s failure to win made me feel like I was a failure. And anyone talking trash about UT losing made me much angrier than a simple game should. Vol Nation, let's not take something awesome and fun and turn it into the thing we worship.

I know most of you will just think I'm crazy or call it "being competitive" which I get. But the truth is, many of us worship this game and this football program. And that's exhausting because it will never give us the satisfaction we desire. Losses will always happen and sold out crowds will still get silenced. Some of you might even be offended by this stuff, and that's fine. But it might be an indicator that you are the ones I'm talking about. I for one am ready to quit worshiping UT and get back to just being a fan who enjoys the game. I invite you all to do the same. And if you want to go even further I will be glad to point you in the direction of something else truly worth our worship.

There is a fine line between worship and fanaticism. No, I do not worship the Vols or football, but I am definitely a sports fanatic. I get why you are saying that though: With all the problems and concerns going on in our society like a screwed up system of justice, hatreds of every sort, corruption, child abuse, substance abuse, (I could go on all day), your minister decided the greatest sin he could speak about at church today was our love of the Vols. Now I get why some folks sleep through sermons.

I diversify too. Aside from the Vols, I am a fan of the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Royals, Oklahoma City Thunder, Colorado Avalanche, the Sydney Swans (Australian rules), and the Seattle Mist (LFL).

I gave soccer a try. It cured my insomnia.

I get in the dumps all week as well, and its.harder for me to get focused to lead worship the next day. That's not good! Lol

I agree that nobody should be cussing out the kids.They played a good game and the only problem I saw were some missed tackles that I'm chalking up to the QB having K-Y on him.The play calling on the other hand I cant get behind.I'm no coach but the 2nd half was a disaster of play calling IMO.

A football forum discussing football, that's all I see here. Just a bunch of opinions about football, some of them stupid, some fairly well thought out. That's really about it.

No one on Volnation has any clout when it comes to influencing the AD in what to do about hiring and/or firing anyone, and with good reason.

I will NEVER have THAT much trouble sleeping. Soccer cured it. Even seeing a TV listing for a game makes me sleepy now.

Already there op. I watch because I enjoy football.
I don't enjoy a loss but the misery lasts about an hour,
Then I move on to other things that I enjoy.

I also enjoy VN except after a loss, this place needs
to be on suicide watch lol.
Everyone always says "it's how we lost" but then I
notice that is said no matter how we lose.
Blow a lead, attempted comeback but fall short or
Just blown out of the water, losing sucks.
But it is just a game.

Actually my pastor just spoke about idols in general as we are going through the book of Acts and that happened to be what the next section of Acts was about. He actually only mentioned football like once. He spent more time on other common idols like money, work, or even our kids.
