I have a gun control question

Yes!.. individualistic vs. collectivist!...
...so let's get back to the point of meaningful reform as this thread is off the rails.. I believe every law abiding person should be able to buy and use all of the weapons they want with caveats: 1.a license to own and shoot that legally registered weapon, this license should act like a driver's license including classroom and practical instruction and a proficiency test, mental health screening, a background check, and a vision test. 2.Insurance should be required on every firearm to provide financial coverage in case of accidents and 3.severe penalties if you are caught with a firearm without an operators license and the proper registration of the weapon in your possession.

The majority of this can't (and shouldn't) pass Constitutional muster.

I am all for dropping the hammer on criminal use/possession.

Be prepared to face the backlash when really bringing down the boom on illegal possession of firearms doesn't start being argued as racist.

our driver license tests don't cover nearly that much stuff. mental health screening? I mean i survived the DMV so there is some level of stability there. also DL proficiency tests are jokes. Where I grew up you just had to circumnavigate the DMV parking lot. and still some people failed.

MY first and only comment in this thread:

I'm a gun owner. I own multiple handguns and long guns. If it would stop these mass killings I would give them up today and encourage everyone to do the same.

But it won't stop it. There's too many other ways. I don't know how to make a bomb, but I'll bet I could learn how pretty quickly if I were of a mind to. I believe the Boston bomber used fireworks to make larger explosives. I believe I'm smarter than him and could do more damage than him if that were my goal.

It's just not true imo that taking peoples guns or limiting firepower will make a difference.

.
Who are you and what did you do with LeConte?

How many of the 40,000 that were killed in their cars enjoying a Jason Aldean concert, sitting in a church pew or dancing at a night club?
I enjoy driving my old hot rods more than the other 3 things you mentioned.

"So what have the Australian laws actually done for homicide and suicide rates? Howard cites a study (pdf) by Andrew Leigh of Australian National University and Christine Neill of Wilfrid Laurier University finding that the firearm homicide rate fell by 59 percent, and the firearm suicide rate fell by 65 percent, in the decade after the law was introduced, without a parallel increase in non-firearm homicides and suicides. That provides strong circumstantial evidence for the law’s effectiveness."

Did gun control work in Australia? - The Washington Post

There is a high probability that gun-related suicides are so high because they are in easy reach and tend to occur in those states where many homes own guns.

Look at Japan's suicide rate:Suicides down, but Japan still second highest among major industrialized nations, report says | The Japan Times

Now look at there gun death's:Gun control: How Japan has almost completely eliminated gun deaths - Business Insider

Does Japan have a mental health problem: YES
Does Japan Have a problem with gun deaths: NO
Move to Japan. It has to be better than New Jersey.

NBA Coach Steve Kerr:

“When 90 percent of our country wants background checks on gun purchases, and we’ve got our Senate and our House not only voting it down, but using the Bill of Rights as a reason for people to have rights to carry these automatic weapons, and we’re getting people murdered every day at an alarming rate. I just have to get this off my chest — our government is insane. We are insane,” Kerr said.

“And what bugs me is this adherence to the right to bear arms. That was back in 1776. People didn’t own automatic rifles, you had to have a musket in case the redcoats were coming. And the beautiful thing about the Constitution is they left open amendments to change things, because things change over time."

Love it when people speak the truth regardless of consequences.

He’s an idiot and so are you if you believe that’s why the right to bear arms exists , it was to defend against a tyrannical government not an invading army. We have extensive background checks in place and automatic weapons aren’t allowed unless you have a special permit. Kerr needs to stick to coaching and you need to brush up on the constitution genius..

Struck a nerve I see. Those "extensive background checks" kinda failed with the Texas massacre. Angry man + assault rifle = bad things hombre. And auto or semi automatic? Whatever. He got off 450 rounds.

Seems Kerr knows more about guns than you... or at least he's honest about it.

It doesn’t take much in the way of intelligence to be an NBA coach. We already have BGCs and automatic weapons are highly restricted as it is.

Ergo, like I said, the background check system failed. Hitting the weed again this early?

Hmm, in the TX shooting, one area of our government failed to report to another so in other words a **** up that would and could happen regardless of how extensive you make the BGCs.

Wrong again , The background check worked, the failure was on the air force for not providing his criminal record. Maybe a little weed would improve your comprehension skills ..🙄

His point, clearly is that the end result was a dude that shouldn't have purchased a gun, did. A failure in the system is a failure of the system, unless you're into moral victories.

It's also pretty hollow to pretend that automatic weapons are hard to get when the end result of a $300 bump stock produces similar results.

Astonishingly, they're still available for purchase (where they're not sold out.)

Ever used a bump stock?

What are the restrictions on bump stocks that make a semiautomatic into an automatic? Private sales do not require a BGC.

I wasn’t aware the shooter was using a modified rifle and fully automatic weapons are hard to get licensed. True nutcases will always find a way to arm themselves regardless.

So amend the constitution. Until that is done then there is no legal way to impose gun control upon law abiding citizens.

Kerr may be able to coach basketball, but it is apparent to me that he has sh!t for brains as far as common sense goes.

Saw today that America has 4.4 percent of world's population but 42 percent of world's guns. Rednecks must be SMILING!

If you know what you are doing, and have practiced, you can fire a 15 - 20 round burst from a semi auto rifle without use of a bump stock or anything. I've done it.
