I guess comic books are not popular anymore

John F. Trent reported Monday for the entertainment website Bounding into Comics that sales of “Superman: Son of Kal-El” — in which the son of the original Superman becomes a climate activist, advocates for illegal immigrants and dates a male reporter after donning his father’s cape — failed to crack the top 50 for the number of units sold only five issues into its new run. This represents an unprecedented sales flop for the Man of Steel, he said.

What went wrong???

Comic Books have been the tip of the spear of wokeness for several years now. Before wokeness, the sales were already not great in comparison to the 90's and early 2000's. But in the woke era, My God they have been horrendous. The only time a book gets sales comparable to the pre-woke era is when a new series kicks off or a book starts a new run from a fresh writer/illustrator team. And even then, the sales boost is maybe two or three issues worth before they tank and go back to the horrible mean.

When "Man of Steel" refers to a gay dude who wears tights and dates a pink haired Asian dude....uhhh... Most guys think that probably sounds like a show on the Bravo channel (or gay porn) rather than "Superman".

I remember a long time ago (1960's) when my brother and I would go to the grocery store to buy the monthly Marvel comic books. Such good times and memories.

There's nothing like that for kids anymore. Too bad.

I hope that the sales of Super Woke continue to tank.

For one, I like that Marvel recast a woman as Captain Marvel. She’s hot.

I remember when comic books broke the 10 cents barrier. The latest Marvel comic to feature the Silver Surfer was 13 cents, leaving only 2 cents for penny candy (MaryJanes).

Marvel: Real characters with real problems in real cities - very relatable to young readers. As a teen in NYC for the first time (the ‘60s), I did look up more than once thinking how cool it would be to glimpse Spider-Man. Marvel wrote as if it could be.

DC: Batman. The rest was meh. Superman? Not plausible. Wonder Woman? She wasn’t going to choose me for sex, so… The Green Latern? Great concept, but somehow dissatisfying as written. But, before “woke,” Batman & Robin? Really? Rich dude grooming orphan for? No. Batman without Robin. Batman as James Bond, spilling his seed into various women who very well may have deserved better - that’s closer to ‘60s relatable.

That was actually a good movie. Plus her character I believe goes back to the 1960s. So at least she's been around for awhile.

1. it was an "eh" movie, one of the worst in the MCU, though I admit Brie Larson is relatively easy on the eyes. Eternals told this movie to hold its beer and took its place on top of the dung heap as the worst steaming pile of poorly written woke MCU crap ever envisioned.
2. No, Captain Mar-Vell, has not been a "her" character "since the 60s. Merely a bunch of ret-conning to stuff a woman into a man's part instead of giving her a unique history.

Carol Danvers was Ms Marvel dating back to the 70s. The original Mar-vel died of cancer in the early 80s and a Black Woman took on the moniker (80s woke?). Danvers had a few other identities over the years but has been officially Captain Marvel for close to 15 years now.

Comic sales have actually been up as a whole since 2019. Not anywhere close to the peek of the 90s but overall the industry is fairly healthy. Back issue market is actually quite insane lately. Regret selling off most of my collection about 5 years ago because it’s going waaaay higher today.

As for Superman Son, who cares. Superman has been a hard sell for years. It’s why they killed him in the 90s. It was the only way to juice sales.

But I got bad news for all of you. Comics have always been “woke”. Superman started out as social justice warrior fighting slum lords and corrupt local officials. Captain America debuted punching Hitler a year before entering the war. Black Panther premiered in the top selling book just as the Civil Rights movement was underway. Stan Lee regularly used his soap box to denounce bigotry and prejudice. Really the list goes on and on. Only difference today is sexual orientation is more prevalent and that stirs up the anti-woke whiners.

Meanwhile school board in TN is banning a Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel about the Holocaust… but let’s get our panties in a knot over Superman’s son being gay.
