But as a football fan, the first day of 2007 was fantastic. Michigan suffered a beat-down at the hands of USC. Auburn-Nebraska, Arkansas-Wisconsin and Georgia Tech-West Virginia were all fantastic games as well. Then of course, the classic in Glendale. That Fiesta Bowl easily ranks among the best football games I've ever seen.

I know our Vols lost, but I know the true fans of the sport around here can appreciate what a great day it's been in the world of college football.

This bowl season has been unbelievable. Those who were slamming the bowl system before are really not looking too smart these days.

The argument for a playoff always remains. I prefer the bowl system as-is (maybe with a few tweaks).

Yeah cause you know if we had a playoff system there would be no amazing games.

You know 1 week after the championships where teams don't have a 1 month layoff where their skills and game speed gets slower. If all that were true then the games would be awful.

We certainly looked like we needed a little more time. but seriously the playoff argument is greater now that people want to see a boise state pull some crazy george mason run. plus youd have even better games with even better matchups

The top 4 teams that had any business wanting a shot at the national title will get to prove who is the best this year. So far, we know that Ohio State and USC are better than Michigan. Now, the winner of UF-OSU is a very clear cut champion.

How can you say that Boise State didn't deserve a chance?

I hate mid majors and give thenm as little credit as possible but I seriously think they at least deserve a chance.

If you schedule one opponent that is ranked, I think you have an argument about going undefeated and being left out of the national title discussion. Otherwise, forget it. The bottom line is that UT (and many others) would have gone undefeated playing their schedule. We probably wouldn't have toppled Oklahoma, but that was postseason, so you can't apply that win to their national title aspirations, anyway.

There are 119 teams. Find one decent one and schedule them.

Very true. You have swayed my opinion, but I'm still Pro-Playoff.

Boise State did completely destroy Oregon State. Oregon State wasn't ranked at the time and did start slow, but they won 10 games this year, beat USC, shut down Hawaii and won their bowl. That's not a bad win for Boise when you consider the final score was 42-14. Boise State also beat Hawaii, which was a ranked team until they lost to Oregon State, and beat Utah 36-3 at Utah.

I'm not a Boise State fan, but it can be hard to get major programs to agree to play a team like theirs when said programs would much rather have an extra guaranteed win against a Western Carolina.

So, you have an undefeated Boise State.... one of only two teams in the nation without a loss, and they still have no chance at claiming a crown. what a joke. the broncos deserve a shot just as much as anyone else.

Yes, they went undefeated... But let's be realistic. Boise has had a very nice season. A WAC schedule doesn't warrant playing for a national title, as long as there are at least two other no-loss or one-loss teams from the big five conferences.

If Mike Hamilton was the AD he should be, he'd be on the phone this morning with Chris Peterson trying to secure his services as our next Head Coach.

He won't be in Boise long.

The chink in the bowl armor that stands out for me is that Boise State (13-0) has now proven that it can not only compete with the big boys, but can beat them. Only in a playoff system would we really be able to find out if a team like Boise State is good enough to win the National Title. The current bowl system robs them of that chance.

It'll be interesting to see who they replace Petersen with. Boise has now pulled down three straight coaches of PNW lineage since making the jump to D-IA in 96. They pulled Dirk Koetter out of Oregon, Dan Hawkins out of Willamette University (Portland) and Chris Petersen, from Oregon.

Something is working. I am always impressed with the level of effort they exhibit. Whenever I watch them I cannot help but pull for them to win. They are exciting to watch.

I hope 'Bama doesn't go after him when they fail to get Saban.

I loved that BSU game. As I said in another thread, they may not have the best athletes in Div. I, but they sure do execute. Outstanding game plan and execution. They get the most they possibly can out of their players.

And should Florida prevail next Monday, it would be an honor to share the title with BSU.

why not? their schedule was made years in advance... they did nothing but meet and exceed every expectation. i'm not arguing that BSU is the best team in the country at all, but they at least deserve a shot. those kids had a flawless season... that alone should merit a better reward than "nice job, but you still dont deserve a shot"

I've always wondered what "QFT" meant. Just googled it. First listing is for guantum field theory, which would not seem to me to be applicable. But Wikipedia came through yet again.
