I was watching games from the past 2 seasons. And... I don't believe Dobbs can maximize our offense.

I think we have an extremley fast and physical team. Disciplined.

Dobbs has been the key cog in our resurgence. He really has.

But im upset because, i want Dobbs to be the championship QB, but imo hes not and will hold us back again this year...

9 win regular season. 10th win in bowl game.

I know im not alone in this, but I hope to be really really wrong.

Dobbs has never been the problem. In fact, he was instrumental in our two pivotal wins from each season that he started (2014 South Carolina and 2015 Georgia).

The problems were talent (Butch put in work there), OL (which Butch fixed with a hire), and defense (which Butch is fixing with this hire).

Its not Dobbs, its our scheme and playcalling. Pray for that to change, but don't be shocked when it doesn't.

Is Dobbs the greatest passer who ever lived?

No.

But I think the problem is already being remedied by Butch recruiting some slightly smaller, more agile slot-type receivers. Even though our deep threat passing game may not be the best, Dobbs productivity will be much higher this year. GFW posted that three out of our four best receivers right now are freshmen. FRESHMEN! That should give you hope that our passing game will improve.:good!:

#119 was short on sense of urgency. JRM said the team relaxed at times, from what he said that's been fixed. #120 is about to ball out and win the NC.

I'm not worried for TN football on offense as long as the philosophy adapts to the personnel. Dobbs is going to almost always be the smartest guy on the field and he runs the ball very well. I don't care if a WR star doesn't emerge... just put points up and hopefully wear down defenses. Dobbs won't be a liability, we just won't necessarily see a beautiful air attack for another year.

Next year I'll be surprised if the offense doesn't revert to a more traditional pro-set/vertical pass look... really depends on which QB wins the job though. I think that if it's Guarantano then the hyper motion Butch ball continues but with more utilization of the WRs. If it's Dormady then there could be more traditional smash mouth/play action than we've seen since Before Butch. I guess a ton depends (in 2017) on who they gonna hand the 'tater off to though.. it would be great if Kamara or Hurd stuck around for their senior year.

Not sure this thread is going the way you intended OP. Dobbs is very talented and if he improves his passing, which he should if he has put in work, then our offense is going to be electric. He has gotten better every year so why think that he has reached the pinnacle of his potential. He is by no means a gunslinger but he makes up for it in other areas of his game. Most teams would kill to have the three headed monster that we have in our backfield. If you feel bad then I don't know what to tell you. Dobbs is more than just serviceable and a potential darkhorse heisman candidate. I think we are doing ok at the QB position.

I think the play calling has done just that. Keep the ball in Dobbs, Hurd, or Kamara's hands. Dobbs is not an accurate passer. I'm sure that Debord would love to be able to toss the ball all over the field and pull that linebackers and safeties back, but the personnel has not shown that they can do that consistently, including pass blocking and WR play.

Well I do understand what you mean. Last week I re-watched last season's Georgia game. As everyone remembers, Dobbs made some outstanding plays.

But what I'd forgotten was how many times that game should have been over in a Georgia blowout if Georgia hadn't missed easy interceptions. (Plus Georgia dropped that easy TD pass).

The same was true in other games last season. Dobbs' interceptions could have easily been doubled.

If Dobbs improves his accuracy drastically, and if his receivers are on the same page with him... then we can have a memorable season. But if Dobbs has the same accuracy problems this year as last, and if this season we don't get all those lucky breaks... I'm just being honest--it wouldn't take too much bad luck for us to end up with four losses!

I'm not trying to be a downer. I'm just saying, given the role of luck and error in college football, this team could as easily have a 4-loss season a 1-loss season.

Our problem last year was holding onto the lead. We didn't have a defense that could effectively hold back the other team. Butch has taken steps to fix that with our now DC, we just have to see how much our D has improved.

Dobbs was responsible for so many of our major plays last year it is unbelievable that you are considering him to be the problem. No he isn't Manning but he sure as hell is one of the reasons our team won as many games as it did last year and is expected to win more next year.

Oh, no problem, really -- it's a nice morning's laugh.

The rest of us know it's not all on his shoulders. There are 3 other captains / the ball carriers need that OL to shine / the defense will be disruptive / etc. etc. etc.

Is Dobbs a great passer? Probably not. Was Peyton a great runner? No.

You go with what you have and for my money, Dobbs is pretty darn good. I'll take him.

All of you saying it's scheme and play calling.

What else would you do different? You run for first downs with Dobbs. It's what you do. He's one dimensional like that. You run short, fast screens for first downs and hope he breaks a big one once in a while. What else do you do with him? I'd like to hear it.
