I Don't Think We Should Red Shirt JJ Peterson

I've seen some talking about what games JJ will play in before he red shirts. He's not the type of player to be here more than 4 years. I think we should play him early and often (starting week 2 since he not getting to Knox til tomorrow).

Thoughts?

Heh, at first thought you were talking about the Jauan Jennings "JJ."

Maybe we should call JJ Peterson "JJP" or something, to keep confusion down.

As for the question, I think he'll play as much as he can contribute to us getting Ws. Don't think CJP is going to hold him back one bit, if he's among the best 22 players on the team. My guess is, that means he will NOT redshirt this year. He might be playing catchup through September, but some time in October he'll likely get on the field, and--if he's as strong as his *s say he is--will not be off the field much at all from that point.

It is for people like Peterson that the old rule that freshmen were not allowed to play was there to begin with. I really do think that it would benefit him to just get used to a new way of living under the guidance of high-quality people like Rumph for a year. He has had a living Arrangement where the closest thing he has to adult mentorship is Rush Propst. I think he would be better served to be shown that there is something to life other than football.

He can play 4 games and redshirt. So yeah, play him later in the season vs. FL, Bama, GA, Auburn, or South Carolina.
But my 2 cents is worth about 2 cents, like yours. This is Pruitt's team now.

Seriously, if the kid makes it in time and is cleared by the AA there is no way he hits the field on defense until late October first of Nov. He hasn’t practiced at this level or with this team. He hasn’t had the strength and conditioning supervision that these guys have. The nutrition alone I’m sure he is well behind. He’s recovering from a shoulder. So much hype, seen it before, and I’ve seen it be a bust. I’ll wait and see what he can do before I say he’s going pro early

The guy is a freshman. Who is he going to beat out? LB looks like a pretty good position of depth for the team. He could be great, could be overwhelmed as a frosh, may be a bust, or get better with time. There are other highly rated players not quite ready to contribute full time when they arrive. No guarantee with him anymore than anybody else, although CJP seems to be very accommodating to his situation. Maybe he sees a lot of potential or maybe he is being more accommodating because of Propst.

If he is indeed officially on the roster soon, I think he'll redshirt, but with the new rules on redshirting, that might simply mean he plays against ETSU and maybe a little bit in 2-3 other games towards the end of the season. The problem is that he really has no experience with the playbook or practice, so I think it's very tough to just throw him out there against, for instance, Florida or Georgia. He's not going to be good enough for our 2-deep in all likelihood without at least some time in the system.

Still better to get him this year, maybe get him a little bit of playing time, and have him with full participation next Spring and Summer.

They will play him asap...Pruitt said he was putting the best players on the field period

i doubt it, since we will need ballers on special teams, and he will be a nice backup on all 4 LB spots. The redshirt is only necessary if he’s here for all 5 years. I don’t see that happening.

He will probably be playing special teams if nothing else. He may even contribute at lb before the end of the year.

Agreed. Play him when he's ready, as much as the new rule allows, no more.

Could be perfect timing toward the end of the season, depending on how healthy we are.
