I don't like the Debord hire (I will keep this short)

DeBord's offenses were not even that great within his own conference. Azzani offers more at the OC position than DeBord. Do you want more?

I would venture a guess that Coach MD has forgotten more about offensive play calling than almost everyone complaining about his hiring. I'm willing to give the man a chance. If he doesn't work out, we move on. Whether we like the hire or not will not change BJ's mind. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the ride. GBO!

Tom Brady wasn't an all time great until he got to the nfl. There's a reason he was taken in the 6th round.
I'm not saying that Debord is not a good (or bad) hire, but could the reason Brady was not drafted until the 6th round be that he was not recieving the best coaching while in college?

The thing to remember is that this is Butch's offense. He needs a great Coach to work with the QBs and call the plays. We have a guy here now who won a National Title as a play caller and we managed to hang onto Azzani. This is good. Debord is not trying to climb the ladder. He wants to coach. He's 58, which is plenty young.

It's a good hire. A smart hire.

Debord inherited a 8-4 team in his first stint as OC at MI and turned them into a 12-0 team with an NC. Then he inherited a 7-5 team in his second stint and turned them into an 11-2 team.

I heard a radio show in Memphis today (have no idea the name or host as I usually listen on the net to Knoxville sports radio) but he read several "famous football folks" comments about the hire of Coach Debord at UT....ALL positive.....the ONLY negative comments I've heard have come from a "few" Vol fans.... and maybe a couple of disgruntled Michigan fans as well...But by the people who actually know much more about football than I pretend to think this is an OUTSTANDING hire by UT ...and I think I'm fairly understanding of the game by having close family members who played/coach the game in the SEC as well as NFL...and having many in-depth conversations with over the years...So with my limited understanding I'll trust that CBJ, with his job on the line, would hire someone that's completely competent and the right fit for UT...Heck, under Debord is where CBJ first starting learning about the "spread"....

Thank you 0P. You repeatedly admitted you have no idea why you don't like Debord. Honesty is a good thing.

Oh I know very well why I don' like him:

1. He is not a proven recruiter
2. His offense is not good
3. It's the time for him to attend his grandchildren, not to coach in SEC

Makes too much sense...smh.

1. He was Michigan's recruiting coordinator in 2004 and 2005 and got the #8 and #6 recruiting class respectively:

2. I have read different stats on this, but regardless, his team was 52–11 when he was OC at MI. (Not sure that includes bowl games where he was 4-1) They put up respectable numbers against Notre Dame and Ohio State that year. Also, notice how the Wolverine's record improved drastically each year he became OC from the year before. Point is, I am sure you can find stats to argue the point either way.

UPDATE: I haven't read this stat anywhere, so I thought I would point out the fact that Debord inherited a 8-4 team in his first stint as OC and turned them into a 12-0 team with an NC. Then he inherited a 7-5 team in his second stint and turned them into an 11-2 team.

3. Last, 58 is NOT that old. How old was Monte Kiffin when Lane brought him here? Hell, how old is he now as he coaches Dallas in the pros (74). Yes, he has been removed from College football as a coach for some time, but where was he? THE PROS. Probably just getting that much better.

The fact is, this guy has a pretty impressive resume as an OC. He has an NC for crying out loud. He fits as far as the culture goes. The guy has been in football long enough to be able to make adjustments and Jones and Azanni both know the offense well enough to get him acclimated.

I feel fine with this guy as an OC. An HC? I'd be furious, but that is not the case. Am I jumping for joy? No. But can he take us to another level? I think it's visible. The two biggest questions for me are, can he adjust to a different offense than he is used to running? And, what about the quarterbacks? He has no experience there and we just brought on 3 Freshman. That being said, I can't help but wonder if Jones is going to hire a QB coach, or if Azanni is going to assume that role. Last bit of good news is, we have that much more OL Coaching experience.

We shall see... but there is enough here to support Jones on the hire.

Alright, finally a post with some substance.

1. Him being a recruiting coordinator is novel to me. That's interesting...

2. I still think his winning record with Lloyd Carr as the HC during the best days of Michigan football doesn't mean much.

3. Monte was at the front line of coaching defense right before he came to UT. And Monte earned his cred from recruits and players, which made him a leader. Debord is nobody in SEC.

I bet the guy who started this thread bemoaned the hiring of Butch in the first place and hated it because he could not recruit.

You got my point. I bemoaned the hiring of Dooley and how did that work out?

Butch Jones' success in recruiting, which I am glad to see, doesn't mean my point is invalid. My point has always been: UT needs coaches with a proven track record in recruiting.

Tennessee should have hired you.......
Lets trust the Coach....I bet he knows more about what he needs than you do......AGE......How old is Chavis ??????

Haha, there is a reason that Jones is the HC while I am typing behind the computer screen, so I am cool with where I am.

It's not a age thing alone. If you work in a very competitive and specialized area (think about coaching SEC football, or working in some niche field in finance), your only qualification is whether you are currently working in the exactly the same area as the the area of your next role.

Chief is actually a great example of someone who is doing great at his age: 20-year continuous track record as an DC in SEC, actually decent at recruiting (LSU didn't just magically got 3 TN recruits this year), and can be a "figurative leader" that I mentioned in my original post.

DeBord was DONE as a coach, that's a fact. He can blather about how "selective" he was being about his next job, but that's BS. There was no next job except this one, which was a career salvage operation for DeBord organized by his old pal Butch. It doesn't mean he will fail. It does mean that Jones didn't even go to the trouble to do a proper search for a good spread OC, which is what he should have done. So it's kind of a crap move, IMO, and Jones knows it is a crap move, too: that's why he waited to make the announcement, and trotted out all these old/former players to tell us what a great coach DeBord was 20 years ago.

All I am hearing on these post are negative remarks about Debord being a pro-style guy and a non-productive.

Debord's offense was always productive as OC and any good OC can adapt or change thier offensive stlye. Does Cutcliffe's offense at Duke look the same as when we had Peyton or Tee. No!! Can he still call productive plays?? Does his schemes have some spread concepts?

My Guess is He will work closely with Coach A and the other offenseive assistiants regardless of what title's change to help expand the offense. A huge part of the OC is job is execution. Can we execute effectively. I can call a read option to Hurd but can we execute the blocking schemes to be successful on each play is Huge. I believe Debord will bring that. I could care less if he is boring or looks or runs his mouth like Lane Kiffin. Just Win.

Maybe not my first choice but the guy knows offense

Sunseri knew defense too!
