I think the Vols have done a nice job on the D line especially against the run. Richardson is a handful.
On the other hand, the secondary has major issues. Some of that was scheme to keep Richardson at bay but the poor tackling and open receivers all day long is an issue.
I think I was most disappointed on 3rd and 4th down…which were complete breakdowns. Got to do better! I guess I just see people trashing the defense but I think we have some real play makers upfront.

Florida had larger than usual receivers, and that had a lot to do with our poor tackling. Still don’t understand why they were always wide open though. They aren’t very fast

We were not a physically dominant defense last year. And as to be expected, we aren't Georgia or Bama overnight. We are gonna be trying to outscore teams until we've recruited a championship level defense (which takes several years).

Please translate this post into English for the hamsandwiches on this page.

TIA.....

Some of it is scheme, IMO. Square peg, round hole. These DB's just aren't good enough to play zone. We need to get DB's that can do both. If we cant get to the QB with 4... theyll pick our secondary apart. I think this D is maxed as far as potential. Gotta outscore folks and hope for 3-4 stops a game.

This is the SEC. And stack up Florida against anyone else? That still have plenty of quality players on their roster. Vols are, at this moment? 4-0. Been awhile since you could say that, right? Enjoy it. So far, this staff has corrected issues as they come up. The ones you are frettiing about can be easily coached up. Yeah, I get there are some defensive concerns, but I feel this team will respond to them.

I think our secondary is being asked to do a little more against mobile QB's. Our pressure must get to the QB, or the receivers are free to run around and find an open spot. We are not getting enough pressure on the QB. A lot of the clutch throws and catches were not on designed routes IMO.

The strength of our defense is the DL. Our LBs are average to below average and our secondary is terrible. No the whole defense isn’t bad but has Banks showed improvement from last year? Currently we have the worst pass defense in the SEC. Is that improvement from last year? Has Banks and Martinez shown the ability to do their jobs effectively? No they haven’t. You can try to put lipstick on a pig all you want but it’s still a pig.

Now there is till a lot of football to be played. Can both coaches improve? Yes. And I sincerely hope they do. But both guys have not shown me anything to this point to think they can or will. Hopefully I am dead wrong on this.

Our secondary had their eyes in the backfield and only soft commitments to their zone because they were afraid of Richardson taking off.

I don’t think we had a single pass break up until the pick at the end. We weren’t even near them. Florida receivers were running wide open for the most part. Soft zones and lack of confidence in starting corners really affect the defensive play calling. Surely this will be addressed in the bye week. GBO 🍊🍊🍊

I agree. At the end of the day, Florida played lights out on 4th down going 5/6. Make just one stop on those 5 conversions and game is a 10-17 point margin. Sometimes team play above average and for Tennessee, Florida is a mental game as well. Giving up all those conversions and still winning is literally a trend breaker. We would normally lose any game like that.

I know AR is a big fella, if we take some better angles and make some open field tackles behind the line of scrimmage the game is not close. Our secondary has to be better on 3rd and 4th down to win big games. The effort from the team was out of this world.

Our offense puts a lot of pressure on the D. Florida ran 87 plays, plus do you think sling blade goes for it on 4th six times if he's playin a normal offense that averages 26 points a game. If he punts on all of those 4th downs everyone today is saying our D played a good game.

They're Safeties cause the aren't good enough to be corners. Slower, stiffer hips, etc.
True. Just seems like our guys don’t close gaps as quickly as other guys you see on TV. Then again maybe I’m just overly critical because I’m a fan

Our D line is playing good SEC caliber football, they were able to pressure Richardson on a couple occasions without any blitzing also I think they played the run very well but on the whole there was not much of pass rush and Richardson ate our lunch because of it, the secondary is just not good enough to play on a island they need help with pressuring the quarterback, my only complaint of the night was our reluctance to blitz.

I'd say we are average at man. We didn't look amazing up to this point in the secondary, but we were decent. Kamal Hadden looked like our best corner until Florida, but they (and him especially) just looked totally lost in the zone.

They in reality against most other teams get off the field 6 times. Nobody goes for it on 4th down every time. So if they forced 4th down, they were successful in my view. Florida played every series like it was the 4th quarter with under 2 minutes to go.
