yes 1080p is hd - but there are several levels of HD signals. 1080 is the highest available picture quality being broadcast at present, there are lower forms which is why the CBS games and the Superbowl will look like they are a higher quality picture even though they are HD - a lot of networks can't broadcast in full 1080p - which is why DirecTV is making such a big deal about it right now.
Couple of points here. Direct TV PPV and On-Demand will broadcast in full 1080p. Broadcast networks ONLY broadcast in 720p or at the most 1080i which is not True Full HD. Additionally, since it would cost them so much to upgrade most broacasting companies will not be switching to 1080P anytime soon.
One more point, unless your flat panel is over 50" in size, you will see NO discernable improvemt in video quality versus 720p.
Moral of this story: Buy 720p and save yourself A LOT of money. Plasma is better for sports, too.

and... I will take Huard over Lundquist the Hutt and toolbox Danielson any day of the week, as far as commentary goes.
I don't criticize UF fans for their Tebow obsession, since that would be a bit hypocritical (we did have a large statewide increase in baby's named Peyton, after all)
But CBS Tebow love is sickening. Lundquist looks like a walk on for a role in Leprechaun 2 and Danielson spends his Saturday evenings watching Tebow porn.
What is the deal? I mean, I'm glad the game is on TV but it is not good at all. Not in HD. Not only that, but the picture is fuzzier than standard SD. On mine, the sound kept going in and out.
I would think, with this new contract, that at least all CONFERENCE games would be in HD and on a standard channel that most people would get on TV.
You'd think that you'd get the typical ESPN-type production, but you'd be wrong. It was subpar.
Is the channel not in HD, or have the games just not been in HD themselves?
ESPN-U is great compared to the alternative. PPV. In Charleston ESPN U on comcast is in HD, thus it is hard to tell the difference from other ESPN networks (besides the comentators, and I actually think Brock is decent).
I agree - 1080 is 1080 and I am not pushing one over the other but they also broadcast in 720p which is considered HD - but not as high a resolution as 1080; which could cause the difference in appearance of two "HD" channels looking different.
To me its the friggin commentary!! Brock Huard isnt bad but that other guy, WTF??? That guy wanted KY to win that game so bad. Everytime they did something halfway good, he bout went crazy.
This^^ I recorded it on DVR and could NOT believe the picture quality! I looked for ESPNU in HD but never found it either!I thought the commentary was terrific. I mean, I didn't realize that Randall Cobb was from until EVERYTIME HE TOUCHED THE BALL. The kicker too!
Also, I have every HD channel offered by Dish Network, and ESPNU is not one of them on there either. The picture quality is like watching an old game from the 80s and 90s on ESPN Classic.
1. Kentucky has not beaten Tennessee since 1984.
2. Randall Cobb is from Knoxville.
That is about all I got from the commentators in that game.
