I can't believe

I for one am looking forward to the matchup. Anyone older than 13 knows what Penn State is all about. Who cares if they're not where they used to be? Neither are are we. They played in the Orange Bowl last year while we sat home. These are two of the top ten teams of all time; anyone who can't get excited about that matchup has no idea what college football is all about.

man vcgtx, I'm normally with you, but this statement is patently absurd. Using this logic, we should be mighty excited about watching Alabama vs. Army based upon their past strengths. I'm betting you wouldn't be that pumped.

I'm excited because it's frickin' UT and I couldn't care less about the history of the PSU program. Heck, most of the current players in those programs probably know less than you and I about their respective histories.

I with you. Penn State has lots of history and so do the Vols. Good programs should make for a good game. I am hoping we spank just becuase I am car pooling and tail gating with some Penn State fans here in FL. We also need redemption from the last time we met Penn in the Citrus Bowl.

But there's a HUGE difference between Army and Penn State. Army's only been ranked once in the last forty (!) years, while Penn State played in the Orange Bowl last year, had an undefeated season in the 90s, etc. It's history without being ancient history.

Two all-time top ten programs are playing, and one of them still has their Gen. Neyland coaching them. For a meaningless 11 AM bowl game, I'd say that's a pretty good matchup. There are a bunch of totally interchangeable, nondescript Big Ten teams we could be playing instead -- Minnesota, Iowa, Purdue, etc. -- but Penn State is not one of them.

(Plus we still owe them some payback from 91 & 93. Those games sucked.)

Anyone who watched college football last year should know PSU ended the season ranked 3rd last year and if USC or Texas fell late in the season could have had a crack at the Rose Bowl and a National Title. I know that's a stretch and some homerism but it is what it is.

I, for one, am also excited about the match up with Tennesee and can't wait for 11 AM Jan. 1 to get here.

I would just like to know how it can be a "lose, lose situation for UT"? PSU last year won a BCS bowl and has one of the, historically, best programs in the nation. Joe Pa had 3 bad years out of the 50+ he's been at PSU. I'm just not understanding the 'holier than thou' mindset comes into play here.

It is not a lose, lose (nor is it a loose, loose) situation. I think we got a decent draw and trust me . . . most UT fans take no win for granted, regardless of rankings.

Who cares what a team did in the 90's or for the last 50 years. I appologize, but you guys are starting to sound like bammers. What national respect do we get for beating an unranked Penn. State? If we win and it is close, nationally, people are going to say, see, TN barely beat an unranked team. If we lose, then nationally people are going to talk about how bad we are. If we beat the crap out of them, we will be labeled as the team that beat up on the oooold guy.

I am not saying they are a walkover, but it helps us very little if any. Other than just having another nationally televised game.

I could probaly check a few of your post and find a few grammer issues, but I dont, seeing that I would consider myself pretty pathetic for trying to be an english teacher on a chat board.

You're wrong.

Penn State was 3 seconds away from being undefeated last season.

Penn State could be saying "Great, we get to play a team who didn't make a bowl last season."

This will be one of the most popular non-BCS matchups. It will be fun.

Get over it.

I agree. The UT v PSU, the Arky v Wis and the Iowa v Tex are easily the best non BCS bowls and will be more popular than at least 2 of the BCS bowls.

Yup, because having good grammar, while also pointing out the lack of it in someone else means you're an English teacher. Hadn't heard that SLAM before.

No, because most people on here actually expect others on here to be able to comprehend a fast typed opinion. I for one, am at work and dont have time to spell check or do I care to. Others seemed to have understood my point.

lol, sorry easy target on that one
ah, no sweat...i'm going to the Panthers/Steelers game this weekend...and i can honestly say i'm not really looking forward to it. it may be one of the ugliest ball games ever between the Steeler's turning the ball over, and the panthers going three and out...the game could end in a 0-0 tie and someone win it in OT 3-0.

on a sidenote...the avatar will remain unchanged until someone else wins the SB...so until then, we are STILL your World Champions!:)

It's pretty simple to type quickly without making a complete mess of your thoughts.

Oh well. No need to discuss things like this any further.

Let me ask you this, PSU hater: Considering the "what have you done lately" attitude of major sports media, who do you think looks better right now in 2006 - Penn State or Tennessee?

You know that we're not playing for anything, right? As I said, it's a meaningless 11 AM bowl game. We're playing for how mediocre our ranking will end up being. We need to win this game as a springboard into next year, especially given how putrid some of our bowl performances have been in recent years, but when you kick off while most of the country is still nursing their hangovers, it's safe to say that nothing tangible is riding on the game.

Given that, I personally think it's great that we have a matchup with another one of college football's traditional powers. If you can't appreciate the history and tradition of the sport, then I'm sorry for you. You're missing out.

Plus we owe them for two bad losses in 91 & 93. But I guess you don't remember those games, either.

that's a loaded question....but i'd still have to say Tennessee, despite 2005's success for PSU and failure for us. but it depends on what you give more credance to....rebound years after abysmal losing seasons or down years after a conf. championship?
