I am infuriated about my game day experience

I'll stand I'll sit I go along with the rest of my seat section. Been doing that for years. Been alot of games I have stood the entire time. The problem I had Saturday night was 3 drunks standing up and no one else and they were talking about work not even watching the game.

That's a shame. If it happened as you described (your demeanor specifically) then those two should be disciplined.

Not being a negavol, but if we can't get our non participating players to act right on the sideline;how in the hell are we to expect them to have the ushers behave?

I see this thread a lot... and I feel bad for people on both sides of the issue, honestly.

Does Neyland have a specific rule that says whether you're allowed to stand or not? It's inexcusable to subject people who pay $70 a ticket to the whimsy of barely-literate power-tripping ushers.

As fans, I think we deserve to have a clear rule that is enforced consistently across the stadium so that we can respond to the complaints of other fans, ushers, and police officers.

Also send a letter to the paper. I say go to the next home game and see if the ushers are in the same section. You might be able to get the names. I would have been kicked out, and probably arrested for that matter. Move to my section in xx1. You can stand and yell all you want.

Amen Brother. It's a sad day when a fan can't stand and cheer. I would send a letter to ESPN as well. Old Mikey will end up buying this guy some season boxseats where he can stand all he wants! GO VOLS! USHERS SUCK!

And to the guy who said video taping the incident on your cell phone wouldnt help, yes it would, especially if the ushers really had their name tags turned and were cursing and forcing ppl to sit down or be arrested.

Imagine that video being played on ESPN Sportscenter about 300 times.

This would be a big issue in the national media. The announcers talk about the "stand-only" crowds at other stadiums, neyland is the sit only or be arrested crowd

And because you have no physical evidence, and probably didnt get the names of the ppl around you, no witnesses either. All the ushers have to say is that you were drunk and in an "unreasoning state" when you were asked to calm down and have a seat. It's their word against yours and, they will win, in most cases.

I would have pressed the issue and gotten their names. They would have had to put their names as witnesses on the police report... just a thought.

I have to agree with the Ushers on this one. Standing in front of others is rude selfish behavior. The people behind you paid for their seats also, and should be able to enjoy the game sitting if they choose. Grow up.

Just wanted to clarify something here. I just spoke to my friend who is in charge of the ushers inside Neyland. The ushers are instructed to do the following when called out for a situation such as this:

They are first to listen to the complaining party, then proceed to the individual/s in question. The ushers are to try and amicably reach a medium between the two parties. The ushers can not demand someone set down in their seats. The only rule they have to enforce would be if someone was "standing in their seats", hanging over the railing or being verbally or physically abusive towards another spectator, team or official. According to him, and the head of security the University has no policy to force anyone to sit, only to try and resolve issues so that it benefits all involved if possible.

I forgot to add that his recollection of the process of buying a seat is that you are actually buying your own little 18"'s of space inside the stadium.

If you don't believe me call the AD and speak to them.

why does their right to sit down trump my right to stand?

Sounds like our entire student section should have been escorted out. :)

It doesn't. Absolutely not. There are accommodations for those whom are handicapped and can't stand during the game. If they're going to be technical saying their money is more important than ours then they're going to lose. Simply reading stories like this gets me angry.

So in other words the ushers were going out of their bounds of power by telling the OP to sit down. That logic makes sense to me. I'd love to see them try to make me sit down during a high stakes game. And if I were to be arrested for standing up inside the stadium then UT could expect a lawsuit coming their way.

Now that's funny.

wasn't there a big story a few years back about some lady being asked to sit down or leave?

Like I said in an earlier post, I was sitting beside the OP with my wife. I did get the names of all of the ushers involved as well as the KPD officer. Sending them to the OP once I get home, but didn't see a point in putting them up here. As far as our behavior, none of us were drunk. The OP and his friend and my wife and I tried to be civil with the ushers to no avail. Even the Bama fans sitting at the end of my row watched in disbelief. All I really want is a concrete answer... can I stand up or not. If not, I will watch the games from home... the seat is much more comfortable there.

EXACTLY!!! I'm glad someone finally said it!!! But ultimately the OP is upset about the manner in which he and the others were treated BY THE USHERS.... Sitters can sit all they want but why is it that they are usually the ones being so negative when we lose? What did they do to help the energy of the game?!?!!!!

If your only interest is to sit down to watch the game without worrying about fans standing up and cheering, then stay on your effin' couch.

She was doing the same repetitive cheer over and over and over while standing. I think it was more the overly exuberant cheering that really grinded the gears of the people around her.

Not sure what cheer she was doing, but I am not sure that is any better reason to be threatened with removal from the stadium. I am just at a loss to why standing and cheering have suddenly become such a big deal in a football stadium.
